Public space design

contemporary public architecture

At the beginning of this century, for the first time, more urban residents were recorded than rural ones. The built environment has become for the most part, our natural surroundings. Living in the city, in the era of global trade, free market, do we still have to live in communities? Surely we are not indifferent to what happens to the common parts in the city, as their quality affects us all. The state of the public sphere testifies to our relations: man-society, man-environment, and also to the level of wealth of a given society. The public sphere is most susceptible to being shaped by the values currently ruling in society. Public buildings express the spirit of the community.

how to create good community architecture?

The public sphere is a democratic value, a characteristic of Western societies, evidenced by its absence in the Islamic world, for example. The Greek agora, after a series of transformations, ends up in the form of various kinds of urban squares, squares, parks. With contemporary trends such as participation and urban movements, we are seeing the politicization of public spaces, not only in the context of the functions they serve. An increasing number of people want to have an impact on their immediate surroundings. It seems that it is architecture dedicated to public activities that gives character to a city and creates its atmosphere. What's more, it constitutes its urbanity - in contrast to the countryside, which may not have public spaces at all. In many European cities, the square is what identifies the city, what we recognize a place as such by. So public architecture must take into account the local genius loci, capture it and highlight it. Well-maintained common areas, thoughtful landscaping - parks, plazas, squares and accommodating elements of small architecture, all have a significant impact on the quality of life in the city.

sustainable trends in public building

Copenhagen, as a multicultural city, countering social exclusion, has created with residents a multifunctional, tolerant space for all - the Superkilen Park. The city, with Christiania at its center, is famous for exceptionally well thought-out expansion and enhancement of public spaces, nurturing the city's vitalitý and dynamism, often using public-private partnerships. This is a model example of a democratic approach to public spaces. A city so thoughtfully designed is also more sustainable and uses less energy. Another example of green trends in public architecture, and administration specifically, is the innovative City Hall in Melbourne, Australia. The building uses the principle of biomimicry - a trend in architecture and design that mimics nature not so much in form, but in the way it works.
