25.06.2025Competition for the design of the ASP building at 44 Raciborska Street in Katowice
organizer: Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, SARP Katowice Branch

The Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice and the Katowice branch of the Association of Polish Architects announce a competition to develop an architectural concept for the Raciborska 44 project, an expansion of the teaching infrastructure of the Academy of Fine Arts campus for art and design in Katowice.
purpose
In the area of the competition study there is a garage and utility building extended and superstructure to serve as a service and residential building in its shell. The construction, carried out by a private investor, lasted from 2015-17 for use as a recording studio. Currently, the Academy of Fine Arts has become the owner of the site. The existing facility significantly deviates from the needs and expectations of the Employer, and its adaptation would involve far-reaching spatial changes, which is uneconomical and technically unjustified. In view of the impossibility of more rational adaptation to the new function, the decision was made to completely demolish the current facility.
terms and conditions
The competition is an implementation competition, limited, one-stage.
Due to the development of the university and student interest in new fields of study, it has become necessary to expand the ASP campus with new teaching facilities. The resulting space will serve students, but also as a field for exchange with external stakeholders - entrepreneurs, local government units, cultural institutions, etc. The teaching and research activities carried out in the building will allow the implementation of high-level research and projects, including those with a significant impact on improving living conditions.
The designed building should, by its architectural form and the building materials used, strive to maintain spatial order. The Academy's goal is to construct an energy-efficient building equipped with modern installations that meet environmental standards, designed in accordance with the principles of universal design, sustainable development, inclusive and fully accessible to all users, including those with special needs. This investment also envisages solutions using passive building elements (e.g., passive windows, roller shutters) and the use of technologies to improve the automatic control of equipment in the building. Indications for the use of the above elements will be analyzed at the design stage. It is also assumed that a green roof and terrace will be created, combining ecological and didactic aspects, as well as taking into account the guidelines of a closed-loop economy .
