19.11.2025Competition for the development of an urban planning and architectural concept for the reconstruction of the center of Sosnowiec in the area of Stulecia Square
organizer: Sosnowiec Municipality

The Sosnowiec municipality, represented by Sosnowieckie Inwestycje in cooperation with the Association of Polish Architects Katowice Branch (executive organizer), has announced a two-stage, implementation competition for the redevelopment of the center of Sosnowiec, the area located in the area of Stulecia Square, colloquially known as "Patelnia."
purpose
- to create a new, attractive vision of the place being the Center of Sosnowiec and at the same time an important nodal point for vehicular, railroad, tramway, pedestrian and bicycle transportation,
- to create inclusive, friendly, good-for-life public spaces corresponding to the modern lifestyle,
- obtaining solutions that increase the city's resilience to climate change and, at the same time, influence the public's environmental awareness,
- maximizing the use of the values cited in the New European Bauhaus and the Davos Declaration.
The studies should take into account both the needs of local residents and temporary users, travelers. The expected result is to achieve the proper character of this part of the city.
terms and conditions
The competition is an implementation competition, limited, two-stage.
The area of the competition study is located in the central part of Sosnowiec. The boundaries of the study area are defined by, among others: Sosnowiec Główny railroad station - which is the historic transportation core of the city, created on the Warsaw-Vienna railroad route, the area of the Church of the Sacred Heart of the Lord. Sacred Heart of Jesus Church - an object entered in the register of monuments, numerous residential buildings with retail and service functions - in the frontages of 3 Maja Street, Stulecia Square and Warszawska Street - including several buildings in the municipal register of monuments, as well as other commercial and service buildings. Stulecia Square and the facade of the Railway Station, which closes it behind the line of 3 Maja Street, are the terminus of the city's main commercial axis - Modrzejowska Street. Numerous public transportation lines run through the area covered by the study.
The subject of the competition is to develop an urban-architectural concept for the area of the center in Sosnowiec in terms of:
- reconstruction of the transportation system (streets, sidewalks, parking lots, etc.),
- pedestrian connection of the square in front of the railway station building with Modrzejowska Street,
- locating public transport stops at "zero" level,
- organization of the square space in such a way as to "bring out" the architecture of the PKP station building and the existing residential buildings,
- limit distances between stops and architectural barriers to the minimum necessary,
- hierarchical distribution of stops of various modes of transport depending on the intensity of use and the volume of travelers' checks,
- the location of the cab bay and kiss & ride bay (they should be located closest to the exit from the train station),
- create attractive spaces for small-scale trade and services.
