Competition for the design of a viewing platform with a descent to the "Dubai Beach" in Jaroslawiec

organizer: Postomino Commune, Association of Polish Architects Koszalin Branch

Postomino Municipality, in cooperation with SARP Koszalin Branch, has announced a competition for the design of a viewing platform with a descent to the "Dubai Beach" in Jaroslawiec. {More}

Postomino Municipality, in cooperation with SARP Koszalin Branch, has announced a competition for the design of a viewing platform with a descent to the "Dubai Beach" in Jaroslawiec.

purpose

The purpose of the competition, as we read in the regulations, is to obtain the best concept in terms of architectural, spatial and functional-utility aspects of the construction of a viewing platform together with an exit to the "Dubai Beach" in Jaroslawiec (Postomino municipality) and land development.
The ordering party expects a functional, resistant to the effects of hostile environment, formally distinctive, with low operating costs, user-friendly building with a modern, at the same time simple and incompatible architectural form, which can become a business card and symbol of the municipality.

terms and conditions

The competition is an implementation competition, one-stage, conducted in a limited procedure.

The area covered by the competition is a plot of land located in the northern part of Jaroslawiec, on the border of the village with the Baltic Sea. The entire investment is to include the development of a green park area located on the upper level of an active cliff and which is also the access and the beginning of the descent to the artificial "Dubai Beach". At the foot of the cliff from the descent, a promenade is planned to run along the beach in an easterly direction to the descent to the beach at Rose of Winds Square.

The main idea is the concept of creating a modern, functional, economical and user-friendly exposed, open to the seascape viewing point (viewing platform) that is at the same time an exit, located at the foot of the cliff, to the tourist attraction of Jaroslawiec, the artificial "Dubai Beach". It is assumed that the designed development should form a coherent whole of architectural and urban composition, consisting of a complex of park greenery, viewing platforms, an exit to "Dubai Beach" and a promenade at the foot of the cliff connecting the exits to the beach No. 5 and No. 4. It is planned to create an architecturally attractive place, functional, enriching the space of the municipality, with an architectural form that can become a business card and symbol of the municipality, meeting the latest standards and principles of inclusive and universal design.

The scope of the solution should include at least an architectural and urban design concept including:

  1. concept of land development in the area defined by the boundaries of the competition study, showing functional-spatial connections with adjacent areas of development and public spaces, setting standards for the arrangement and maintenance of the essential elements of land development, including, squares, roads, pedestrian routes, bicycle paths, parking spaces, small architecture, etc..;
  2. architectural concept of the new development determining the hierarchy and mutual relations of the elements of the functional-utility program of the viewing platform with the descent to the "Dubai Beach" in Jarosławiec, as well as the standards of the essential elements of the function, form and construction of the designed object(s);
  3. the idea of solutions in the field of construction, development and installation, in particular innovative, pro-ecological and energy-saving solutions, taking into account in particular:
    (a) prevention of destructive influences of unfriendly marine environment (chemical aggression of seawater, air, impact of wind power along with sand, active cliff, instability of beach levels),
    (b) use of energy from renewable sources.

The functional and spatial solutions included in the concept, as well as material and construction decisions should be characterized by appropriateness and moderation.

The 11th edition of the International VELUX Award student competition

organizer: VELUX

The VELUX Group is holding the International VELUX Award student competition for the eleventh time, with the theme of natural light. The prize pool is as much as 30,000 euros.

purpose

The goal of the competition is to encourage architecture students to challenge and deepen their understanding of the role of daylight in architecture, this special and always important source of energy, light and life. The award aims to expand the boundaries of daylight in architecture, including aesthetics, functionality, sustainability and the interaction between buildings and the environment.

According to the organizers, it is probably the largest international competition for architecture students. Since the competition began in 2004, more than 6,000 projects have been submitted, from 800 universities, from 130 countries around the world. Projects are awarded in two categories: "Natural Light in Buildings" and "Natural Light Research."

terms and conditions

Pre-registration is a prerequisite for submitting a competition entry—students must register with their name, email address, university name and country. Then they can form a team, add a research supervisor (who also has a chance to receive a prize) and start working on the project.
The organizers encourage interdisciplinary teams, consisting of engineers, designers, architects and landscape architects. Each student or student team must have the support and approval of a teacher from their university.
Registration takes place at daylightandarchitecture.com/iva/ and runs until April 1, 2024. The second stage of the competition is to submit the work between April 15 and May 30, 2024.
Students—individually or in teams—can work on projects in two categories:
  • "Natural light in buildings".—projects that depict the applicable conditions for providing daylight and sunlight to buildings—including the impact of building construction and site context, orientation, shape and dimensions, window openings, screens, shadows, interior divisions, materials and exterior conditions. The ways in which daylight is directed and reflected in an urban context are also analyzed. The organizers place special emphasis on architecture for health and well-being and projects that address challenges facing cities, communities and where daylight and architecture can help create change through better and healthier living environments; for example, through retrofitting and repurposing existing building stock.
  • "Natural light research"—projects dealing with the physical properties of light, the fundamentals of optics and materials, as well as technological development, new materials, storage or transportation of daylight. Proposing the use of daylight in public spaces for functional, recreational, cultural or spiritual purposes, and studying the effects of daylight on state of mind, health and well-being.

Each student or team should have a research supervisor.

awards

In the summer of 2024, a jury will select winners in both categories in each of five regions determined by the International Union of Architects: Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, and Africa.
The ten finalists will present their projects in person to the jury in the winter of 2024. At that time, the jury will select one grand prize winner in each of the competition categories.

The total prize pool is up to €30,000. Depending on the findings of the international jury, the following will be awarded:

  • A Grand Prize of €5,000 in each category (€4,000 for the student and €1,000 for the mentor) for the most outstanding projects,

The realization of the new building is intended to provide students of stage music, theater and opera with contact with a real theater stage and a live audience already in the course of the didactic process.

The new building will combine the function of a stage for theater and stage music (with an auditorium for about 400 seats), the headquarters for the only studies in this part of Europe in the specialty of artistic violin-making, as well as the headquarters of the Laboratory of New Musical Practices and the Vocal Institute. The building is also planned to include a conference room, film music studios, catering functions, an archive, administrative premises and an underground parking lot with a minimum of 100 parking spaces.

The building should meet modern requirements for cultural and teaching and research functions in the field of music, provide the highest acoustic standards. It is permissible both to design a compact volume and to dismember the body. The concept should take into account the context of the surroundings and complement the historical development quarter as much as possible in terms of urban planning. The designed building should also be environmentally friendly.

Competition for the development of an urban-architectural concept for the new headquarters of the Jerzy Zitzman Banialuka Puppet Theater with a branch of the Beskid Bookstore with collections for children and young people, the so-called Green Library in Bielsko-Biała

organizer: City of Bielsko-Biala, SARP Bielsko-Biala

The city of Bielsko-Biala, together with the SARP Bielsko-Biala Branch, is organizing a competition to develop a concept for the new headquarters of the Banialuka Puppet Theater. The task is also to design the Beskidzka Bookstore. The deadline for submitting applications to participate in the competition is February 6 this year.

purpose

The purpose of the competition is to obtain the best urban and architectural, spatial and functional-utility concept for the new headquarters of the Jerzy Zitzman Banialuka Puppet Theater in Bielsko-Biała.

terms and conditions

The competition is a limited, one-stage, implementation competition. The competition has been assigned competition number SARP 1054.

The subject of the competition is the architectural concept for the new headquarters of the Jerzy Zitzman Banialuka Puppet Theater with a branch of the Beskidzka Bookstore with collections for children and young people, the so-called „Green Library” in Bielsko-Biała. Green Library in Bielsko-Biała (as two separate or one object) along with an underground garage for about 100 cars and development of the project area as a study area directly related to the designed object(s).

The maximum, estimated, planned total cost of execution of the works implemented on the basis of the competition work as of the date of announcing the Competition is PLN 100,000,000.00 net.

The maximum, non-exceedable cost of the order to which the Competition Participant — the author of the selected Competition work — will be invited to negotiate in the mode of a sole-source order is: PLN 5,000,000.00 net.

Each participant may submit only one application for admission to the competition. The submission of an application is also considered to be done jointly with another contest participant.

The investment, envisaged in the development plans of Bielsko-Biała, as part of the vision of the city's development through the prism of culture, was included in the competition bid for the organization of the European Capital of Culture. From the description of the study (Bidbook preselection City of Splits):

"The J. Zitzman Banialuka Puppet Theater is one of the oldest puppet theaters in Poland and the most famous in the country and the world. It has
two stages and unique craft studios. It is the organizer of the International Festival of Puppetry Art, one of the most important puppetry reviews in the world. We are planning to build a new seat for the theater due to the fact that the space, built just after World War II, no longer meets not only the expectations of audiences, but also prevents further development of the theater and does not meet the requirements of accessibility."

Development area

The boundary of the development area, marked on the map attached to the competition regulations, includes the area located by the railroad line running at its western border, bounded by PCK Street to the north and Władysław Broniewski Street to the east. The area currently includes a municipal parking lot and space used for a marketplace, as well as a three-story building intended for demolition located in the southern part of the development area. The Bielsko-Biała Lipnik train stop is located in the vicinity.

The area of the site is approximately 1.2358 hectares. The competition area is covered by the provisions of the current Local Spatial Development Plan No. 081. The text and drawing of the plan are available at this link.

Functional program

The new headquarters of the Jerzy Zitzman Banialuka Theater is to occupy a usable area of about 5,500 square meters. The guidelines for the stages and infrastructure, spectator zone, theater studio department, administrative rooms, technical and ICT infrastructure rooms, as well as the external infrastructure are described in detail in Appendix No. 11 to the competition regulations.

The branch of the Beskidzka Bookstore with collections for children and young people, the so-called Green Library, is to occupy a usable area of about 3,500 square meters. The guidelines for the Green Library presented as suggestions for designers are described in Appendix No. 12 to the regulations.

The underground garage for about 100 cars will occupy an area of 3,000 square meters. Direct access to the garage from the theater space and the library should be provided.

The usable area of the building(s), defined as the sum of the usable areas of all rooms, including the area of communications, utility rooms and the underground garage, shall not exceed 12 thousand square meters.

The development should include, appropriate to the function and form of the building/buildings, accesses, walkways, parking spaces (including parking spaces for persons with disabilities), parking spaces for coaches, parking spaces for bicycles, biologically active area, space allocated for a market that is held temporarily on market days or on selected days of the week, and possibly other elements. Communication guidelines are available in Appendix 13.

Other requirements:

  • preserve the function of the market (a place for a market within the development area should be provided),
  • demolition of a three-story (usable attic) building located in the southern part of the development area with a building area of about 450 square meters should be taken into account,
  • pedestrian communication links should be provided with public transportation and directions: 1 Maja Street, Zielona Street,
  • full accessibility of public spaces should be ensured in all facilities, which spaces should allow their free use by all users, thereby meeting their needs and expectations,
  • special attention should be paid to the economics of the proposed solutions, so as to optimize the cost of the construction process, future operating costs of the building and ensure its positive impact on the environment,
  • care should be taken to minimize the embedded carbon footprint (associated with the production of building materials) and operational carbon footprint (calculated over the lifetime of the building, associated with energy consumption),
  • use of solutions in the facility that take into account the increase of green space (walls, roof) and rainwater retention, along with the introduction of water and greenery into the created public space,
  • the conditions specified in the following planning documents should be taken into account: the study of the conditions and directions of spatial development of Bielsko-Biała, the characteristics of the airing conditions of the city of Bielsko-Biała.

The competition work should consist of:

  • the graphic part - a maximum of four boards in the format 100×70 cm in horizontal layout (the boards should include: the concept of land development in accordance with the scope of the competition study made on the attached basic map in the scale of 1:500. projections of all floors in the scale of 1:200, a minimum of two elevations in the scale of 1:200. a minimum of two characteristic cross-sections in a scale of 1:200, a minimum of five visualizations - including a view of the entire establishment, a view from the main entrance, as well as visualizations of the interiors of the theater and the library, the boards may include additional diagrams and other drawings necessary for the presentation of the design concept as deemed appropriate),
