Professor Alexander Grygorovich has died

Professor Aleksander Grygorowicz, an urban planner, architect, long-time university teacher, co-author of numerous housing developments and designs for temples, mainly Orthodox churches, including the Holy Trinity Sobor in Hajnówka, created with Jerzy Nowosielski, passed away on June 3.

Aleksander Grygorovich was born on September 2, 1923 in Sarny, an area that had been part of the Volyn province since the 1930s. In 1945 he began his studies at the Faculty of Architecture at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow, where he prepared his master's thesis on the Dobczyce development plan under the guidance of Professor Tadeusz Tolwinski. In 1967 he defended his doctoral thesis at the Cracow University of Technology, and presented his habilitation thesis there nine years later. In 1986, he became a titular professor.

He first gained professional experience at the Central Office of Architectural and Urban Design, at Miastoprojekt Krakow, at the Krakow Municipal Design Office and at the Directorate of Municipal Investments. He began his teaching career in 1969 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, and from 1976 he was associated with the Poznan University of Technology, where he headed the Department of Spatial Planning and Village Design. Since 2010, he has taught at the University of Arts in Poznań, holding the position of head of the Spatial Planning Studio there. In 2006, he was awarded the SARP Gold Badge, and a year later he received the SARP Poznań Branch Honorary Award.

Among the realizations co-created by Aleksander Grygorowicz were projects of housing estates, including those in Jaworzno (Tadeusz Kosciuszko, Dabrowa Narodowa, Podwale) and numerous temples - he was the author of the Orthodox Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in Yalowka, which is listed in the register of monuments, or the aforementioned Holy Trinity Cathedral in Hajnówka.
