A seemingly empty frame floats in space - and, as if by magic, transforms into a luminous disk. Behind the surprising transformation of the Discovery lamp, designed by Ernesto Gismondi, lies Artemide's technical know-how and sophisticated design. With its minimalist, geometric shape, Discovery is a piece that blends in with its surroundings without dominating them. The slender aluminum profile defines perspectives, angles and architectural details. Only when turned on, the largely invisible, ethereal body of the luminaire suddenly becomes voluminous.

This amazing effect was achieved with the so-called "edgelight" technology: an LED strip is embedded in the aluminum profile, turning the inner surface of the transparent acrylic glass into an emitting surface. Micro dots on the acrylic glass ensure maximum efficiency and even light distribution. This microscopic dot pattern - like the surface of the acrylic glass itself - is barely visible to the naked eye. The result of the precise, pinpoint light distribution is excellent visual comfort thanks to even, powerful and glare-free light. Discovery is therefore suitable for offices and workplaces as well as for private living spaces.

Since the introduction of the first horizontal pendant lamp in 2015, the Discovery family of lamps has been growing steadily. In addition to the 70 cm round wall lamp, the Discovery Vertical round pendant lamps are also available in 70, 100 and 140 cm sizes. With their vertical line, they keep the perspectives, angles and details of the lamps within the frame - they are both a light fixture and an object.
Completely new are the square and rectangular versions of Discovery Space, which also constantly change the space, creating new scenery again and again thanks to their incredible transparency and perfect illumination, appearing and disappearing.

The introduction of colored light and white light of varying color temperature have added even more magical charm to the Discovery lamps. In the "Tunable White" version, the color temperature can be individually adjusted from warm to cool white. The version with RGBW LEDs (red, green, blue, white) allows not only pure white, but also all possible color tones and any desired color saturation. The colored light opens up new areas of application for the lamp family - especially when it comes to taking care of well-being and emotionality. None other than Artemide founder and chief executive Ernesto Gismondi developed the Discovery family of lamps. The resume of the lighting expert, designer and entrepreneur is extremely exciting: Ernesto Gismondi, who studied aeronautical and rocket engineering, chaired the Department of Rocket Engines at the Politecnico di Milano from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. He was also one of the founders of the legendary Memphis design group. His enthusiasm for new materials and technical innovation, as well as his irrepressible pioneering spirit characterize not only Gismondi's designs for Artemide, but also his successful collaborations with international design and architectural celebrities. Ernesto Gismondi has already received a number of important business and design awards. These include the Compasso d'Oro for lifetime achievement, which he was awarded in 2018.
Not only the creator, but also the product itself has been recognized with a prestigious design award: at the 25th ADI Compasso d'Oro in 2018, the Discovery pendant lamp was also among the award winners.
