Success of Polish student groups in the international competition for revitalization of Eliava bazaar in the Georgian capital! Adam Stalica, Aleksandra Magiera and Magdalena Majsak from the Silesian University of Technology received the Golden Mention. The work that received an honorable mention was created by Kamila Jagieniak and Maciej Rachwalik, students at the University of Arts in Poznań.

The competition's organizers, Terraviva and the University of Georgia, invited participants to create an innovative plan for the redevelopment of the Eliava bazaar in Tbilisi, Georgia's capital.

Eliava Market is a vibrant haven, interweaving commerce and culture. Its labyrinthine pathways weave stories of livelihoods, resilience and social ties. However, recent talk of relocating this iconic market has raised concerns among its longtime vendors and customers.

- organizers describe.

The Eliava market opened in 1995. Despite this, it is still an active place that attracts with the variety of goods sold and their low prices. Participants in the competition faced the daunting task of transforming a place with such a vibrant, dynamic character and rich history into a welcoming, easy-to-navigate and eco-friendly space, while maintaining its unique atmosphere.

Submitted works were judged primarily on sensitivity to the local context of the quality of architectural solutions.

Recycling, upcycling, revitalizing in a sustainable way

A group of Polish students received a Golden Mention for their pragmatic, urban-integratedand very green project titled "RE-FABRICATED Eliava: A Sustainable Reuse and Upcycling Hub."

Adam Stalica, Aleksandra Magiera and Magdalena Majsak decided to combine the bazaar's rich past with modern urban design. The new Eliava bazaar is meant to be vibrant, with a dynamic space that serves both the community and the environment.

We decided to use a circular economy as the centerpiece of the concept. By reusing existing metal stands and containers, we are preserving the authenticity and spirit of the bazaar while giving it new life

- say the creators.

Thanks to its modularity, the trade stands can be arranged according to the needs of the users.

Increasing environmental awareness is one of the most important aspects the authors cared about, so they included new landmarks with pro-environmental functions in the design. The map included repair points and a center for recycling and education about it. In addition to more areas for education, the existing multi-story building provided space for an art studio and a gallery displaying recycled works.

Greenery is present here and within the bazaar in the form of squares, and on its perimeter, to serve as a buffer between the noisy market activity and residential development. Along the bazaar, on the river side, the authors proposed creating a new promenade also surrounded by greenery.

Another issue the developers focused on was the spatial layout of the Eliava bazaar, which "although unique, can sometimes be disorienting and chaotic," they explain.

Our goal was to organize and renew its labyrinthine structure. The new layout will preserve the characteristic features of the bazaar, while introducing new public spaces

- the authors add.

Among the commercial stands and green areas, the project also includes a multifunctional square, which can serve not only as a marketplace, but also as a space for events such as music festivals and outdoor cinemas. A viewing tower has also been designed.

The project offers a very pragmatic but distinctive design with excellent connections and integration with the texture of the city. The interconnected green spaces are well designed and positioned in relation to existing residential functions and proposed neighborhood functions

- comments jury member Nodar Knanchiani of Georgian studio Altertopos.

The natural course of the river and time in a green bazaar full of Georgian culture

The project, designed by Kamila Jagieniak and Maciej Rachwalik - "Green Eye of Tbilisi", also awarded in the competition, involves revitalization of the nearby river and preservation of Georgian culture. The authors treated the well-being of the river as equal to the needs of the residents - they took care to restore its natural course and at the same time create green areas, conducive to recreation and increased environmental awareness among visitors.

The bazaar space was designed with Georgia's culture in mind. With spaces for activities, traditional trktrak games or social gatherings, the bazaar will allow for the celebration of local customs and the strengthening of human ties.

As a result, the bazaar will not lose its original character as a place to exchange not only goods, but also thoughts, traditions and experiences. On the contrary, its role as a key meeting point will be further emphasized, and the space itself will become even more open, friendly and functional for Tbilisi residents and tourists visiting the city

- say the authors of the project.
