The OFF GRID FARM architectural competition organized by Samana Group encourages participants to take advantage of the site's natural assets and create innovative agricultural solutions to help create a more resilient and sustainable future for the peninsula.

TheOFF GRID FARM architectural competition organized by Samana Group encourages participants to take advantage of the natural assets of the site and create innovative agricultural solutions to help create a more resilient and sustainable future for the peninsula.

objective

The goals of the competition include, but are not limited to, creating a self-sufficient farm capable of meeting the needs of a family, showcasing innovative solutions for renewable energy generation, water harvesting and waste management, and promoting the use of local materials and fostering community involvement in collaborative environmental and economic development efforts.

terms and conditions

The competition task is to design an "off grid farm" that goes beyond conventional norms. Participants are to create a self-sustaining, pioneering agricultural ecosystem that integrates renewable energy sources, innovative water management techniques and sustainable farming practices in response to the challenges currently faced by Samaná Peninsula residents - limited access to electricity, water scarcity and agricultural constraints.

The plot on which the project is to be located is in Loma Atravesada, in the Las Galeras district of Samaná province on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic.

The program is to include a main house of 200 to 400 square meters, an adjoining guesthouse of about 60 square meters, a warehouse or barn, a garage or covered area for cars and equipment, and accommodation for staff.


The competition is open to young designers_and students_under 35 years of age. Projects can be developed individually or in teams of up to four people.

The registration fee is respectively (amounts do not include tax, 23% VAT should be added):
  • during early registration: students $79, architects $99
  • during standard registration: students $99 USD, architects $129 USD
  • during late registration: students $119 USD, architects $139 USD

evaluation criteria

  • Innovation; designed buildings are to seek new solutions in structural systems, technologies and/or functional programs.
  • Relevance; proposed solutions should address existing and most pressing problems defined by participants;
  • Coherence; participants should consider the natural and sociological context, the design must be consistent with the existing environment.
  • Sustainability and efficiency; the building must be sustainable and consume zero energy, the selected solutions must contribute to the well-being of local residents.
  • Use and knowledge of local resources; the proposed solutions should maximize the potential of local materials while maintaining high aesthetics and compatibility with ecological solutions.
  • Aesthetic value; the farm is expected to add value to the space.
