New face of "Modrzejowka"

On June 30, 2025, the results of an architecture and urban planning competition on the future of "Modrzejowka" - the former villa of Helena Modrzejewska, the only surviving home of the famous actress in Poland - were announced.

The competition, organized by the Krowodrza V District Council in cooperation with the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology, aimed to create a concept for transforming the monument into an open social space, responding to the needs of the local community.

The competition was attended by 77 male and female architecture students who, as part of their "Conservation Design" course, decided to take part in the competition instead of a standard credit project. Their works were based on the results of public consultations, in which nearly 500 residents of Krowodrza took part.

The winning projects were selected by a jury chaired by Chief City Architect Janusz Sepiol.

The Competition Jury: Anna Biskupska-Sperka, Deputy Director of WUOZ, Dr. Urszula Forczek-Brataniec, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Cracow University of Technology, arch. Magdalena Buczyńska-Zapała, President of SARP Krakow, Anna Baran, art critic and curator, member of the association "Friends of Modrzejówka", Janusz Sepioł, Chief Architect of the City of Krakow, arch. Kazimierz Łatak, member of SKOZK, Lewicki-Łatak Office, Rev. Lukasz Michalczewski, Economist of the Archbrotherhood of Mercy, Maciej Żmuda, councilor of the City of Cracow, chairman of the Council of District V Krowodrza.

It awarded three main prizes and three honorable mentions. An additional prize was awarded by the "Friends of Modrzejówka" Association, which was one of the organizations initiating the competition.

The total pool of prizes in the competition amounted to more than PLN 10,000.

The projects were highly appreciated for their sensitivity to historical context, social integration and creative approach to the topic. As the organizers stressed, the competition showed how much potential there is in "Modrzejówka" and how important a role it can play in the future as a Community Cultural Center.

An exhibition of the awarded works will be opened in mid-July at Axentowicz Square in Cracow.
