Competition for the development of an architectural concept for the reconstruction of Karowa Street "New Karowa"

On December 1 this year, we learned the results of an implementation, two-stage competition to develop a concept for the reconstruction of Karowa Street in Warsaw, organized by the Bureau of Architecture and Spatial Planning on behalf of the President of the City of Warsaw.

The idea behind the investment is to improve and make more attractive the connection between the pedestrian and bicycle bridge and Krakowskie Przedmieście Street. It is to improve the quality and accessibility of public space and facilitate pedestrian and bicycle transportation, in particular to allow people with limited mobility to overcome the difference in terrain levels at the height of the Warsaw Escarpment.

Fourteen studies were submitted for the competition, and five projects were qualified for the second stage. The competition court composed of:

  • Małgorzata Dembowska - referee, architect, OW SARP
  • Dorota Bagińska - architect, OW SARP
  • Marcin Dawidowicz - Mazovian Regional Conservator of Monuments
  • Tamás Dombi - Director of the Traffic Management Office;
  • Marcin Duda - architect, Department of Architecture and Construction, Downtown District Office
  • Monika Konrad - architect, Deputy Director of the Office of Architecture and Spatial Planning
  • Anna Paź - Head of the Department of Public Space Development, BAiPP
  • Łukasz Puchalski - Director of the Municipal Roads Authority

awarded First Prize to the proposal of the RS Architektura Krajobrazu studio, and Second Prize to the team composed of Malgorzata Zmyslowska and Franciszek Ryczer Architekt. Third Prize was won by the work of EMA Studio. Two equal honorable mentions were awarded to Piotr Plaskowickiand the team consisting of: Zygmunt Borawski, Jan Przedpełski and Landscape Practice Marta Tomasiak.
