The Golden Cubes Awards is a competition for the most interesting projects in the field of architectural education, carried out by the International Union of Architects since 2011. It awards individuals and institutions that promote knowledge about architecture and support children and young people in understanding how their immediate environment is shaped.

The Polish edition of the competition is organized by the National Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning and is an opportunity to present Polish projects to an international audience and promote the achievements of Polish general architectural education. It is also a chance to appreciate active educators and educators shaping awareness of the role of architecture among people under the age of 18.

The second Polish edition of the Golden Cubes Awards was decided in March, but the official results were not known until April 14, 2023.

An independent jury composed of:

  • Magda Grabowska-Waclawek (Bovska) —singer, composer, songwriter, visual artist, illustrator
  • Jan Körbes —architect, an important part of the Dutch collective of artists and architects REFUNC,
  • Agnieszka Rasmus Zgorzelska —co-founder, board member and publisher at the Architecture Center Foundation
  • Jakub Szczęsny —the first Polish architect whose project, the Keret House, was included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York,
  • Dariusz Śmiechowski —architect, lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, educator

evaluated 31 entries submitted from individuals and organizations from all over Poland.

The jury decided to select three projects that will represent Poland during the international edition of the competition, and awarded two honorable mentions.

In the Publications category, a series of picture books "City Monster" and "Here and Now!" by Joanna Guszta were nominated.

In the Institutions category, the project "What kind of animal is this?" was nominated. —co-design at Zoochitecture Studio organized by the Forms and Shapes Foundation / Zoochitecture and Iza Rutkowska.

In the Schools category, the project "On the Trail of the Zigzag" by Katarzyna Szpernalowska was selected.

In the audiovisual media category, no nomination was awarded.

The presentation of awards in the fifth international edition of the Golden Cubes Awards will take place during the Congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA) in July 2023 in Copenhagen. An educational exhibition organized by the National Institute of Architecture and Urbanism presenting the nominated and awarded projects from the two Polish and international editions will also be held in September 2023.
