Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA)

Marina Tabassum Architects (MTA) is an internationally recognized leading architectural practice based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was founded by Marina Tabassum in 2005, after a ten-year partnership at URBANA, the office she co-founded since 1995.

MTA's work began with a search for an architectural language that was both contemporary and deeply rooted in the local context. The studio resists the global pressure of consumer architecture - the rapid production of buildings that remain disconnected from place and context. MTA's commitment is to create architecture that results from place - conscious of climate and geography. The studio's work is recognized internationally for its environmental responsibility, social commitment and historical and cultural relevance. Each project is a sensitive and apt response to the uniqueness of a particular place, its culture and its people.

In addition to building design, MTA conducts extensive research on the impact of climate change in Bangladesh, working with geographers, landscape architects, urban planners and other specialists in related fields. Marginalized communities - those living in low- and very low-income conditions - are also a special area of interest. Their goal is to improve environmental and housing conditions.

MTA's working model is based on the simple premise of a studio led by Marina Tabassum as chief architect. The team is made up of talented architects and professionals interested in self-built(grassroots construction) projects, ready to push the boundaries of conventional practice. Collaborative architects - responsible for research, design and management of individual projects - work directly under the direction of the chief designer. The studio is consciously kept at an optimal scale, and the number of projects completed annually is carefully limited.

MTA's work model - based on process and reflection - is recognized in the international architectural community as an exemplary example of 21st century practice. The studio has presented its projects and research at numerous events and institutions both nationally and internationally. In 2016, MTA received the prestigious Aga Khan Prize for Architecture for its design of the Bait Ur Rouf mosque.
