purpose

The design task is to create a conceptual design for the Syrokomla 21 courtyard space in Krakow. The purpose of the competition is to select the best design concepts in terms of visual, functional, technological and content.

The courtyard space at 21 Syrokomli Street is shared by two departments of the Academy of Fine Arts—the Department of Graphic Design and the Department of Interior Design—disciplines that control 2D and 3D space. The left wing of the building is assigned to the Interior Design Department, the right wing to the Graphic Design Department.

The task of the competition is to find a new design answer to the definition of space that is shared, accompanying, opening to new functions that will support the building of relationships between people based on art—being its creator and recipient. The main users of the designed space should be students and employees of these departments.

terms and conditions

Participants in the competition may be adults studying at the faculties of interior design, industrial design, architecture and other, related faculties, studying at state and private design and architecture universities in the country and abroad at the studies of the first or second. degree or unified master's degree.

The subject of the competition is the design (interior) of the courtyard of the newly opened seat of the Faculties of Interior Design and Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow at 21 Syrokomla Street. The main users of the designed space should be students and employees of these faculties. The design should ensure safe communication between the buildings, access to the aggregate and include a fire/evacuation route.

The building at 21 Syrokomla St. in Krakow was built between 1913 and 1921 according to a design by architect Jan Zawiejski. During and just after World War I it served as a lone asylum for victims. Only a few years later it was finished, becoming a vocational school for girls. Until 2012, the building was the headquarters of the Clothing School Complex No. 1 in Cracow. Three years later it became the property of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.

Since the 2023/2024 academic year, after extensive renovation and adaptation to the needs of new users, the building has become the headquarters of the Faculty of Interior Design and the Faculty of Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.

The task constitutes:

  • a challenge to escape (spacescape) from standard definitions, templates and mental shortcuts, cognitive schemes that we take for granted, unreflectively approaching design,
  • an attempt to discover the untrodden path (spacexperiment), to find a shortcut, a leap into the future undefined by artificial intelligence, capable of generating only artificial solutions to actual design problems,
  • to create a project involving the re-building of proximity, the relationship between man and man, without the mediation of virtual prostheses. The space of this courtyard wants to be close to people, wants to let itself be experienced (spacexperience).

The space of the inner courtyard of the building on Syrokomla Street is an interior that contains invisible points that bind it together, from the ground level to the fourth floor. It is an area that meets with others inside the building through 85 locks—windows. One can define the space by the area it occupies: the inner courtyard is 698 sqm, of which a free-standing building rises on an area of 82 sqm — the keystone, the nucleus of this space, or is it a blockage?

It is possible to describe the space using solids, including those made of air: the area under study has 14,638m3 of volume, and the use of this matter may require the activation of all the senses.

Aspart of the competition study, participants are required to prepare a work containing:

  • design ideas and assumptions,
  • characteristics and use,
  • a list of elements used.

Presentation of the project in the following formats to choose from:

  • 70×100 cm board (max. 3 pieces) in the form of a printout on a PVC disc + saving the project on P-Drive in jpg format at 72 dpi CMYK resolution,
  • presentation in the form of jpg files—max. 10 pcs. intended for publication in social media, along with a description of the project of max. 700 characters in Polish or English (applies to participants from outside PL), in Word file—saving on Flash Drive 1200×1200 pix. 72 dpi RGB.

The competition works are to constitute an original artistic work that is a conceptual design study meeting the competition objectives.

Contest worksmust not be made using AI (artificial intelligence) technology.

Secured works are to be submitted in appropriate packaging. Each package may contain only one competition work. A sealed envelope with the original completed application signed with an individual code is to be attached to the outer surface of the package. If the work is sent by courier, the envelope is to be glued to the project package in such a way that it does not peel off during delivery by the courier. The envelope must not be placed inside the package.
