UIA 2030 Award. 2nd cycle of the international competition

The UIA International Union of Architects, in cooperation with UN-Habitat, is organizing the second cycle of the UIA 2030 Award. The award is given every two years and promotes the work of architects contributing to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development along with the New Urban Agenda.

The first cycle of the award brought together 125 projects from 40 countries, and the final results were announced on June 28, 2022 in Katowice, Poland, during the World Urban Forum ( WUF11).

The competition is open to architects from around the world. Building projects that demonstrate design quality and that make a significant contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be submitted.

The award will be given in two stages. Entries from stage 1 will be judged at the regional level, reflecting each of the five UIA regions. These are:

  • Western Europe,
  • Central and Eastern Europe, and the Middle East,
  • Americas,
  • Asia and Oceania,
  • Africa.

One to three regional finalists in each award category will advance to Stage 2. The location of the project will determine the region in which it will be judged.

Construction projects will be selected under six categories:

  • Good health and well-being—an award will be given to a project that can demonstrate that it has made a significant contribution to promoting healthy living and well-being, such as reducing infectious diseases, in line with the principles underlying SDG 3 Objective 3.3,
  • Adequate, safe and affordable housing—a project that has significantly contributed to the provision of accessible, adequate, safe and affordable housing, urban revitalization and/or slum upgrading in accordance with the principles underlying SDG11 Target 11.1 will be recognized,
  • Access to safe, accessible and sustainable public transportation—a project will be highlighted that, through location, design, density, etc., has significantly contributed to the provision of safe, accessible and sustainable public transportation (such as transit-oriented development and/or neighborhood planning) in accordance with the principles underlying SDG11 Objective 11.2.1,
  • Access to green and public spaces—a project that has significantly contributed to the provision of access to safe, inclusive and accessible green and public spaces for all, in accordance with the principles underlying SDG11 Target 11.7, will be recognized,
  • Climate change adaptation and disaster resilience—a project that can demonstrate that it has made a significant contribution to climate change adaptation and/or disaster resilience, in accordance with the principles underlying SDG11 Objective 11.b, will be awarded,
  • Promotion, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems—an award will be given to a project that, through its location, design or construction, significantly contributes to the promotion, restoration and/or sustainable use of ecosystems in accordance with the principles underlying SDG15.

Submissions will be judged on the extent to which they can demonstrate that they address the principles underlying the relevant SDG goals and any relevant aspects of the New Urban Agenda. All submissions will also be evaluated against the following criteria:

  • Building performance/impact—the performance and/or impact of the building in use in relation to the relevant category and its objectives.
  • Design quality—submissions should reflect the quality of the design in terms of amenities, durability and resilience, taking into account the
    construction method, materiality, energy efficiency and intended lifespan along with usability,
    accessibility and adaptability in relation to the intended function. Projects should enrich the lives of their users
    and make a positive contribution to the context in which they are located.
  • An integrated and holistic approach.

awards

A medal will be presented to the winners of Stage 2 in each of the six categories. Honorable mentions will also be awarded to the remaining regional finalists.

  • Ishtiaque Zahir Titas—co-chair of the UIA 2030 award, SDG expert (alternate juror),
