description

On December 12 this year we learned the results of the 8th edition of the NIAiU Prize "Common space is a value" competition.

This is a competition for male and female graduates of various majors for the best master's thesis. The purpose of the competition is to promote the best theses and to motivate students to take up the topic of common and public spaces or public facilities in their master's theses.

The award is always given in two categories: design and theoretical.

In the design category, works in the fields of architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, spatial management, design, graphic design, historic preservation and related fields covering projects concerning public spaces - e.g.squares, streets, green spaces, recreational spaces, sports facilities, urban scale projects - such as urban plans, revitalization strategies, and projects for public buildings - such as schools, hospitals, offices, cultural facilities.

In the theoretical category, works describing phenomena occurring in public space, concerning public buildings, typology, history and socio-economic changes were evaluated, i.e. works on art history, architectural history, architectural theory, demographic processes, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, economics, cultural studies, protection of cultural assets, environmental protection, law, management and all other aspects concerning the formation and functioning of buildings and common spaces.

This year's edition concerned diploma theses defended in 2024/2025 in the fields of architecture and urban planning.

The evaluation of the submitted theses was carried out by the Competition Jury, composed of:

in the design category:

  • dr. hab. Bolesław Stelmach (director of NIAiU)
  • Magdalena Federowicz-Boule
  • Dr. Jerzy Grochulski

in the theoretical category:

  • Dr. Tomasz Slawinski (deputy director of NIAiU)
  • Tomasz Fudala (curator of the MSN)
  • Dr. Marta Leśniakowska prof. IS PAN.

In the design category, the Grand Prize went to Tomasz Jaróg, author of the work "Connect anew. Project of the Prądnik River Park in Cracow" prepared at the Faculty of Architecture of the Cracow University of Technology under the direction of Prof. Katarzyna Hodor.

In the theoretical category, the Grand Prize went to Daniel Mijalski, author of the work"Architecture of Rave: Dance Ritual as Framework of Alternative Inhabitation" prepared at Lucy Cavendish College University of Cambridge under the supervision of Dr. Tao DuFour.

Honorable mentions in the design category went to Julia Golębiewska (Warsaw University of Technology) and Aleksandra Cassino (Warsaw University of Technology), and in the theoretical category to Joanna Glowacka (Warsaw University).

The jury did not decide to award more honorable mentions due to the repetitive nature of the topics undertaken and the restorative nature of many of the works submitted. The jury noted the lack of references in this year's works to the latest research trends in architecture and the anthropology of space.
