description

At the end of June, the international finals of the 18th Architecture Student Contest took place in Lisbon, Portugal. This year, more than 1,300 male and female students from 167 universities in 30 countries took part in a project to transform one of Lisbon's neighborhoods.

Poland was represented by Wroclaw University of Technology students Magdalena Kazulak and Konstancja Staniecka, whose project won the national preliminaries of the contest in April. We have reproduced the full results of the national edition in the article - Students of Wroclaw University of Technology will represent Poland at the final of the Saint-Gobain Architecture Student Contest 2023.

The challenge of this year's edition, organized in cooperation with the Lisbon authorities, was to transform one of the plots of land to adapt it for cultural activities, to develop a new design for a residential building and to create an urban design for a public space connecting these facilities.

The proposals had to comply with the guidelines of the Urban Design Plan and fit into the landscape of the area, stand out with innovative and sustainable architecture, be economically rational, have a full life cycle analysis (LCA) of the buildings with a determination of their carbon footprint, and meet the technical guidelines developed by the Saint-Gobain Group.

Submissions from around the world were evaluated by a jury consisting of:

  • José Luis Cortés Delgado - President of the International Union of Architects (UIA),
  • Audrey Nugent - Director of Global Advocacy, World Green Business Council,
  • Catherine Chevillot - President of Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine,
  • Gonçalo Byrne - President of the Portuguese Chamber of Architects,
  • João Teixeira - director of Municipal Buildings, Lisbon City Hall,

  • Rui Fragoso - Head of Building Management and Resource Efficiency at ADENE - Agency for Energy),
  • Pascal Eveillard - director of sustainable business development, Saint-Gobain,
