The magic of Italian classics in the Macchia collection

26 of May '21

Macchia, Tubądzin Ceramics' 33×90 cm proposal, rediscovers traditional Italian terrazzo. It is a non-standard collection, very contemporary and open to stylistic experiments, which will be loved by anyone who appreciates classic beauty and likes to savor life.

Macchia is associated with pleasure. It evokes warm, sunny days, distant travel and Italian flavors. It's a combination based on the contrast of the durable and timeless with the fleeting and blissful. The inspiration of the classic design of Venetian terrazzo floors, their elegance and luxurious style, is juxtaposed in the collection with the delicacy and distinctiveness of stracciatella ice cream, in which the sweetness of vanilla overcomes the intensity and crispness of chocolate. Macchia is the result of a collaboration between the TU_Kolektyw team: designer Anna Janik-Cieśli and Katarzyna Madalińska, Tubądzin brand architect. The collection refers to the sensations and experiences of being TU and now, as well as the experiences and architectural solutions of previous generations.

Macchia captures that which lies behind the word "stracciare"- the temperamental tearing of a smooth whole into pieces, present not only in Southern cuisine. This effect can also be found in the appearance of classic terrazzo floors, which have been used to decorate unique and prestigious spaces since the time of ancient Rome, and today are increasingly appearing in modern interiors.

Enjoying stracciatella ice cream is a must on any of my trips to Italy. The particles of crushed chocolate embedded in a velvety vanilla paste awaken the senses with flavor, texture and irregularity of texture. Traces of the "stracciare" style aesthetic rip can also be found in the appearance of terrazzo, which still covers the floors of Venetian palaces today. As cool as stracciatella ice cream and as fancy as they are, they are considered an exceptionally elegant and sophisticated solution. I decided to take a closer look at them," says Anna Janik-Cieśla, author of the collection and designer of TU_Kolektyw.

TU_designs. Mediterranean color palette

The original terrazzo floors, which were created from very fine marble crumbs, were the starting point for the work on the collection. However, Anna Janik-Cieśla, designer of TU_Kolektyw, decided to use larger pieces of stone, which enlivened the collection and added an expressive touch. The mild color scheme - from beige to gray, graphite to a shade of blue - in turn brings out the beauty of the marble stones in a subtle way, emphasizing their delicacy and Mediterranean atmosphere. The tiles are also accompanied by polished steel trim and a light gray matte base tile, which are a natural complement to the distinctive terrazzo motif.

I wanted to modernize the Italian classic, so in the design I gently changed the proportions and reached for larger pieces of stone. Their arrangement is no longer so dense, so they create a clear, dynamic structure. I abandoned the 18th century aesthetic of pavimento alla Veneziana. The place of Venetian pavimento, made of very fine aggregate fractions and finished in a high gloss, has been taken by tiles with a matte finish. In my edition, terrazzo resembles more of a precious stone, and the whole collection has been given a modern, simple and austere form," says designer TU_Kolektyw.

Katarzyna Madalińska - Tubądzin brand architect - will soon talk about how the Macchia collection looks in the interior, as well as the creation process itself.
