Trees instead of parking lots. Another part of Warsaw will change its face

15 of February '24

More than 200 parking spaces will disappear, to be replaced by 220 new trees. This is the future of the Zlota and Zgoda Streets area in Warsaw, for the reconstruction of which a tender has just been announced.

Several important investments are underway in the center of the capital, which are likely to change the perceptions of its inner city. On Chmielna Street, a neglected promenade with crumbling small architecture, the first new paving slabs are already being laid. Advanced work is also underway at the foot of the Palace of Culture and Science, where the first stage of the A-A Collective's Central Square project is being implemented.

The next step is to be the reconstruction of the entire downtown section in the area of Zgoda, Zlota and Jasna Streets. The competition to design the metamorphosis of this area in 2021 was won by the RS Architektura Krajobrazu studio, which is also responsible for the concept for the reconstruction of Chmielna Street.

The project is one of the most important undertakings within the framework of the New Center of Warsaw, as it concerns an area as large as 2.5 hectares, ten times larger than Five Corners Square. The effect of the changes is expected to be proportional to their scope. Not only Zlota and Zgoda Streets will be completely changed, but also Sienkiewicza Street, a section of Jasna Street and the squares between them, including in front of the characteristic "House under the Eagles," the Philharmonic will finally receive a representative setting.

More than 200 parking spaces will disappear from the street surface - almost as many new trees will appear. Some of them will be plants as tall as 9 meters and with a trunk circumference of 50-60 cm. For comparison - the largest trees on Five Corners Square measure about 6 meters.

In addition to the trees, squares with low greenery, decorative fountains and three large urban squares are planned. Accompanying these will be a detail-planned replacement of all paving, aesthetic and high-quality materials will be used.

Projects for other areas in the New Center of Warsaw are being developed in parallel. A detailed plan for the reconstruction of Krucza Street is nearing completion. In cooperation with the railroads, Warsaw is also sketching out a new shape for Jerozolimskie Avenue - to be implemented after the completion of renovation work on the so-called "cross-city line. Designers are also working on assumptions for the next stages of "Green Marszalkowska."

The cars removed from the sidewalks and street surfaces won't evaporate , however - an underground parking garage under Warsaw Insurgents' Square is under construction next door, which will accommodate 420 cars - almost twice the number planned for reduction. It's a pilot project run under the public-private partnership model.

In the area affected by the changes, it is planned to leave spaces for residents of the surrounding buildings (parking subscription holders) and "envelopes" for people with disabilities and for vendors. The parking lot is tentatively scheduled for completion in late 2024/early 2025.

Work on the reconstruction of the quarter in the area of Zlota and Zgoda Streets is planned for as long as 24 months - its completion is scheduled for 202 6 year. To ensure efficient access for residents, services and suppliers, the work has been divided into several stages. First, a section of Zgoda Street and Zlota Street will be rebuilt. The trench leading to the tunnel under Marszalkowska Street will be filled in, and instead of it, a wide pedestrian crossing with a bicycle crossing will appear on the surface, which will connect Zlota with Central Square. In the second stage, the second part of Zgoda Street, the square at the intersection with Sienkiewicza Street, and Mlynarski Square by the National Philharmonic will be rebuilt. The last to be renovated will be Sienkiewicza Street and a section of Jasna Street.
