International architecture and urban planning competition CUT Campus

On November 22, 2025 , a gala ceremony announcing the results of the CUT Campus International Architectural and Urban Design Competition was held at the Boiler House Conference and Exhibition Hall at Krakow University of Technology .

The event was programmed as a competition of ideas, so the proposals had to be visionary and could go beyond the limits of the current local law.

The goal of the competition was not to implement ideas, but to open minds and generate discussion about the future technical university.

The task was to develop a proposal for a modern, ecological and functional space for the Krakow University of Technology campus that would blend into the local urban context.

In this year's edition , 456 male and female students from around the world participated , creating 251 works.

The works were judged by an international panel of judges, organized into four categories, under the direction of Jury Chairman Prof. Rafi Sagal. The jury compositions were as follows:

  • Architecture category (Architecture)

    • Arch. Marek Chrobak - President of the Association of Polish Architects (Poland)

    • Prof. Vladimir Šlapeta - Brno University of Technology (Czech Republic)

    • Prof. Kirsten Schemel - Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Münster University of Applied Sciences (Germany)

    • Prof. Lukasz Stozek - Plenipotentiary of the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at PK for student competitions (Krakow University of Technology, Poland).

    • Prof. Boleslaw Stelmach - Chairman of the National Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning (Poland)

    • Prof. Federica Visconti - University of Naples Federico II (Italy)

    • Paulina Ferenc - representative of the Student Government of PK (Poland)

Below are the main prizes and awards given by the Jury in each category:

Architecture

  • Main Award: Alicja Drozd (Cracow University of Technology), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Marcin Gierbienis, title of work: Imagine. The jury appreciated the project for its holistic approach - the campus space was designed as a north-south line, integrating the existing dormitories with a new functional structure and flexible architecture.

  • Honorable mention: Zuzanna Chrzanowska (PK), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Bogdan Siedlecki, title: Vertical Academic Student Farm. The project was awarded for converting an existing dormitory building into a modern, eco-friendly "greenhouse-studio" that balances function and aesthetics.

  • Honorable mention: Aleksandra Grabowska (PK), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Marcin Gierbienis, title: The Square. The judges emphasized the importance of the central building as the magnetic, flexible core of the campus, with a wooden and modular structure.

  • Honorable mention: Michal Kubajak (PK), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Eliza Tomczyk, title: The Beacon of Revival. The project draws attention to the main entrance of the campus, proposing a symbolic beacon and the dynamic form of a building that gathers student traffic.

Special honorable mentions:

  • Caroline Janello, Jannick Spelleken (MSA Münster), mentor: Dr. Ing. arch. Lukas Olma, Next Gen Campus.

  • Diana Anwaryar, Damian Bus, Krzysztof Grymuza, Maria Grzebalska, Aleksandra Maliszewska, Anna Pachnik, Bartłomiej Prusaczyk (Warsaw University of Technology), supervisor: dr. inż. arch. Anna Jachimowicz, ICE 2.0 Conference and Exhibition Centre.

Urban Planning

  • Award: Monika Krawiec, Szymon Mrowiec (Cracow University of Technology), supervisor: dr inż. arch. Wojciech Wicher, title: CUT Campus: Urban Design Concept. The project was recognized for its coherent, balanced urban plan - a park-like axis interweaves the streets and buildings of the campus, creating a pedestrian- and nature-friendly structure.

  • Award: Tymoteusz Bonowicz, Krystian Ratajczak, Klaudia Szczecińska, Joanna Wawrowska (Poznan University of Technology), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Gabriela Rembarz, title: C3 - Campus, Culture, Coexistence. The jury appreciated the concept based on the idea of "Zwischenstadt" - combining academic and urban functions, integration of public and green spaces.

  • Award: Emilia Płachetko, Małgorzata Pytel (Wroclaw University of Technology), supervisor: dr inż. arch. Anna Berbesz-Wyrodek, title: 20°E Campus. The project uses the symbolism of the 20°E meridian, integrating solar geometry into the spatial layout of the campus, creating a university strongly rooted in the context of place and nature.

Special awards:

  • Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at PK: Ludovica Landi (IUAV Venice), supervisor: Prof. Marvin Cukaj, title: New Market. The jury recognized this work for its architectural and urban vision of the campus as a central urban courtyard modeled on the historic structures of Krakow.

  • Rector of PK: Kinga Niebieszczańska, Sylwia Nykaza, Julia Podraza, Miłosz Sadowski, Natalia Toczek (PK), supervisor: dr. hab. inż. arch. Kinga Racoń-Leja, title: Seamlining the Urban Fabric with Vision. The projects were recognized for their bold urban strategy - including the idea of moving the road underground and creating new green spaces and viewpoints.

Special awards:

  • Michalina Kupiec, Michal Lebda-Wyborny (Silesian University of Technology), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Helena Szewiola, Urban Plan for the Expansion of Cracow University of Technology.

  • Maria Michalik (Silesian University of Technology), supervisor: dr inż. arch. Karolina Szaton-Orlinska, Airborne Memory.

  • Patrycja Gil, Oliwia Wiśniewska, Karolina Ziołek (PK), supervisor: dr. inż. arch. Marcin Charciarek, title: Elementary City - Archipelagos of the Future.

Landscape Architecture

  • Award: Katarzyna Jamioł, Łukasz Lindebny (Cracow University of Technology), supervisor: dr hab. inż. arch. Urszula Forczek-Brataniec, prof. PK, title: Linking Traces. The jury emphasized the innovative juxtaposition of natural, social and scientific traces and the water retention system in harmony with landscape aesthetics.

  • Honorable mention: Liliana Pluta (PK), supervisor: dr. Eng. arch. Miłosz Zieliński, title: Green Start - Czyżyny on the Rise. The project appreciated for its simple but strong geometric composition, with multiple lines of greenery connecting the buildings and the campus area.

  • Honorable mention: Thomas Banas (Technical University of Munich), supervisor: Prof. Dr. Udo Weilacher, title: Cracow Aviation Park. The jury appreciated the clear green-water structure and strong references to the history of the former airport.

  • Honorable mention: Małgorzata Danowska, Adam Dudek, Joanna Jabłońska, Marcin Pielak, Wiktoria Skrętowska (Warsaw University of Life Sciences), supervisor: dr inż. arch. Jan Łukaszkiewicz, title: CUT Campus - Innovation, Science, Climate.

Special mention:

  • Gourav Dutta (IIEST, India), supervisor: Prof. Keya Mitra, title: Designing the Future - A Masterplan for CUT's New Campus. The jury highlighted the bold, futuristic urban-ecological vision, with a strong sense of space and ecosystem.

OPEN category

      • Award: Szymon Zawadzinski (Cracow University of Technology), supervisor: prof. dr hab. inż. arch. Maria Żychowska, title: PARK 28 The jury recognized the original approach - the transformation of a rectangular trapezoid into a rich landscape, with elements of small architecture, lamps, seating systems and a water zone, creating a space inspired by parks of the 1980s.

      • Honorable mention: Klaudia Dziobek, Paulina Ferenc (PK), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Katarzyna Kolodziejczyk, title: Aviation Pavilion. Aviation Pavilion designed as a temporary art-educational installation within the former airport apron.

      • Honorable mention: Luis Enrique Marquez Luevanos, Kacper Arkadiusz Pietrzak (Politecnico di Milano), supervisor: Ph.D. Arch. Gerardo Semprebon, title: Cracow University of Technology. The judges appreciated the systemic and pragmatic design, integrating the academy with the surrounding community and the campus structure.

      • Honorable mention: Martin Ostrower (PK), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Marta A. Urbańska, prof. PK, title: Solidarity Plaza - An Ecological, Collaborative Space with Memory. The jury pointed to the combination of ecology, memory and social functions - the plaza as a symbol and community space.

      • Special mention: Karolina Listoś (PK), supervisor: Dr. Eng. arch. Maciej Skaza, title: Dvalin.

      • Special mention: Jakub Szczurek (PK), supervisor: dr. hab. inż. arch. Kinga Racoń-Leja, title: Molecule.

      • Special mention: Zofia Konieczna (PK), supervisor: prof. dr hab. inż. arch. Maria Żychowska, title: Park Sculptures - Symbols of the Cracow University of Technology.

      • Special mention: Weronika Maria Siorek (PK), supervisor: dr. inż. arch. Maciej Skaza, title: Society, Energy, Information.
