Silence as the new standard. The new trend in architecture doesn't scream, and that's exactly why it's worth hearing.

17 of March '26

In a world where everything competes for attention, from screens to architecture, it's becoming increasingly valuable not to. More and more projects are no longer trying to attract the eye, but to appease it. This turnaround is no accident. It's a response to the fatigue of excess that is increasingly affecting how we function and use space. The latest trendbook created by Epufloor calls this phenomenon "conscious silence," and shows that it's not a temporary aesthetic, but a direction that's really changing the way we design.

Until recently, architecture, like many other areas of design, operated on the language of visibility. Iconic forms, expressive materials, the "wow" effect. Today, it is increasingly the lack of it that is becoming the value. Design is shifting from the visual level to the level of experience, and space ceases to be a message that needs to be "read" and becomes an environment where one can simply be.

"Conscious silence", as mentioned in the trendbook, however, does not mean emptiness or sterile minimalism. Rather, it is the precise handling of stimuli, limiting, filtering and organizing them. In such spaces nothing is random, but nothing dominates either. Color does not overwhelm, light does not dazzle, material does not impose itself with its texture. Everything cooperates instead of competing.

This approach is increasingly evident in specific design decisions. In the selection of surfaces that do not aggressively reflect light, in materials with natural texture, in solutions that improve acoustics. Elements that for years have been treated as a backdrop, such as flooring, are beginning to play an important role in building the experience of a space: they influence its perception, comfort of use and even the rate of movement.

The "Inspirations for Modern Spaces for 2026" trendbook clearly shows a shift toward materials that perform "quieter." These include surfaces with a matte finish, muted colors and a clear but unobtrusive texture. Performance characteristics are also becoming increasingly important: reverberation reduction, softness of step, durability in daily use. Aesthetics are not disappearing, they are simply beginning to go hand in hand with function and real user comfort.

This is especially evident in residential, hotel and office projects. Users are no longer looking for spaces that impress for the first few minutes. They are looking for ones that work well after a few hours, days, years. Comfort ceases to be an add-on and becomes the starting point.

The trendbook from Epufloor shows that this change has a deeper basis. Information overload, the constant presence of technology, and the fast pace of life all mean that space is taking on a new role. It is not only to respond to the user's needs, but also to balance them. Architecture is no longer neutral.

Therefore, the importance of elements that were not long ago in the background is growing: acoustics, the presence of greenery and scale tailored to humans. At the same time, the approach to finishing materials is changing: more and more people are choosing those that "work quieter," such as micro-cement or vinyl panels, improving not only aesthetics, but also the comfort of the space, its acoustics and perception over time.

"Silence" in this approach is not the opposite of expressiveness. It's not about designing bland interiors, but a different distribution of accents - less spectacular gestures, more conscious decisions that affect the daily experience of the user.

For designers who want to create spaces that are not only striking, but also work well in everyday use, this is a read that can organize intuitions and translate them into concrete design decisions.
