Premium style heating will work in all conditions

06 of November '23

Located at an altitude of 1,280 meters above sea level, a 19th-century historic house and a modern 550-square-meter residence, public facilities such as hotels and churches - what they have in common is that they all benefit from the possibilities provided by a heat pump. Each of these facilities has been equipped with an environmentally friendly HPA-O 13 Premium heat pump by STIEBEL ELTRON, a manufacturer of heating and ventilation technologies.

This state-of-the-art heating source works well in various types of construction, including in extreme temperatures as low as -200C. To ensure the most efficient (functionally, thermally and cost-effectively) solutions, it is crucial to adapt the implemented equipment to the unique needs, resulting, for example, from the area of the building or the specifics of its function.

GOPR personnel use heat pump

The building of the Beskidzka GOPR Group is located on the Miziowa Hall in the Pilsko massif in Beskid Zywiecki, one of the most popular mountain ranges in Poland. The rescuers, who watch over the safety of tourists and skiers, use the HPA 13 Premium air-to-water heat pump, SBB 500-1 Plus hot water storage tank and SBP 400 E buffer tank installed at their facility. Such an assembled set performs its functions well, even in extreme mountain conditions. Stiebel Eltron donated it to the Beskid GOPR free of charge, with the idea of improving the working conditions of rescuers and providing them with the comfort necessary for resting between mountain actions.

The air-to-water heat pump is mounted outside the facility. Inverter technology ensures high efficiency and low energy costs, and the unit works efficiently even in sub-zero temperatures. In addition, thanks to high flow temperatures of up to 65 °C, it provides the comfort of hot water and heating also through conventional radiators. The device is characterized by low noise emissions - 55 dB, and additionally in night mode ("Silent Mode" function) there is the possibility of its additional silencing. After communicating with the home Internet network, the pump can be controlled from a smartphone (the condition is to install optional additional components on it).

A pump in a 19th-century house

The HPA-O 13 also works well in older properties, such as a modernized single-family house from 1890.The 250-sq. m. property. It is located near Walbrzych. Its walls were built in the traditional technology of the time, made of brick and stone. During thermal modernization of the house, the windows in it were replaced with wooden ones, and the walls were insulated to a thickness of 80 cm, thanks to a layer of 15 cm of Styrofoam. The owner decided to heat the building ecologically with a monoblock HPA-O 13 Premium air source heat pump, which was mounted on concrete blocks outside the house. An SBP 200 E buffer tank was installed in the utility room, while domestic hot water is taken care of by an SHP-F 300 Premium series DHW heat pump.

In addition, a state-of-the-art decentral recuperation unit with heat recovery was installed in each room. A total of six VLR 70 Trend EU units and one VLR 70-8 CU central controller make up the system.

The use of heat recovery ventilation, especially in old houses, brings a host of advantages. These range from improving indoor air quality, reducing dust, smog, odors and mold, to ensuring optimal humidity, reducing energy consumption and avoiding moisture damage to walls.

Three times E

An example of a large investment with high energy requirements that can be efficiently, economically and ecologically heated and cooled is ANMAR - Wholesale Plumbing and Bathroom Showroom in Pruszcz Gdański. The 2,600-square-meter facility has installed Stiebel Eltron HPA-O 13 Premium air source heat pumps of the monoblock type, in a modular arrangement for commercial applications. These are reversible pumps that perform the heating and cooling function providing thermal comfort all year round. This type of pump provides a maximum supply temperature of 65 degrees Celsius even when the outside temperature is - 20 degrees C. This means that they can be used in facilities that require both higher and lower flow temperatures, that is, both new and retrofitted.

Specific conditions as to the range of supply temperature caused the set of five heat pumps to be divided into two systems: three working for the needs of surface (floor) heating, and two for the purposes of technological heat of air handling units. In this way, the highest energy efficiency was achieved. Prior to the investment, the owner of the facility analyzed which type of heating to choose. Preliminary calculations showed that the most efficient would be the use of heat pumps. Operating bills confirmed these analyses: costs are 60 percent lower than if gas heating had been used.

Pumps in religious facilities

The first facility of the Archdiocese of Gdansk to be equipped with heat pumps is the Warzenko Tourist Center on Lake Tuchomskie, near the Tri-City. The center, managed by Caritas, operates a facility that cares for people with disabilities and those requiring extra supervision, as well as children from difficult backgrounds. The facility also has commercial functions - it can be used for conferences, weddings or rented for other needs. This makes it possible to provide funding for the Center's statutory activities.

The center in Warzenko consists of two buildings from the 1970s and one built a few years ago. The facility uses Stiebel Eltron HPA-O 13 Premium monoblock heat pumps in a modular arrangement, which work for heating, cooling and domestic hot water preparation, as well as a 400-liter buffer tank, two domestic hot water storage tanks of 500 liters each and modular automation that manages the entire system.

The hotel rooms are heated and cooled by underfloor heating. The conference room is heated and cooled in the same way, and additionally has an air handling unit with heat recovery. As a result, the air is reheated in winter and cooled in summer. The system operates at the following parameters: in heating mode 35/28 degrees C. supply and return, in cooling mode 22/17 degrees supply and return, and prepares domestic hot water to a temperature of about 55 degrees C. A non-standard solution is surface cooling. Its huge advantage is noiseless operation, which is extremely important in conference and hotel facilities. Automation keeps an eye on the dew point, that is, it does not allow moisture to precipitate on the cooling surfaces.

Plane heating also proved its worth in the parish church in Luzin, Kashubia. This church is an example that even large buildings (1,500 sq m) can provide comfort with low energy expenditure, comfortably and ecologically. In its case, energy distribution was divided into two heating circuits - the nave and the sacristy and chancel, since the temperature in the church is to be 16 degrees C. and in the sacristy 20.

A mono-energy system based only on electric heating was used: four HPA-O 13 Premium air-to-water heat pumps run on a 1,000-liter heating buffer. Domestic hot water comes from an SHP type pump.

The church has also installed 24 kWp photovoltaic panels. They produce 22 MWh of energy annually, while the pumps consume about 14 MW, so the system balances itself.

Residence with an eco pump

Another example of the use of the HPA-O 13 Premium pump is a newly built private residence near Gdynia with an area of 550 sqm. The owners were determined to have their home heated in an eco-friendly way, functioning without combustion, smoke and other pollutants. Stiebel Eltron experts calculated the house's heating needs at about 26 kW, and in response to these needs proposed a cascade of two HPA-O 13 Premium Series monoblock air-to-water heat pumps to heat rooms and prepare domestic hot water.

The concept of the inverter air-to-water heat pump in this case provides a smooth adjustment of the unit's power to the current heat demand, saves not only costs, but also ensures thermal comfort.

One product - many possibilities

The HPA-O 13 Premium Series air-to-water heat pump is suitable for any type of construction: from single-family to commercial - for both new and retrofitted buildings. One type of unit offers many possibilities for its application.

However, it is worth remembering that in order to achieve high energy efficiency, and thus the lowest operating costs, it is necessary to plan solutions tailored to the specific building and the needs of the investor. To this end, expert support in the design of the installation, technical and installation advice and close cooperation with design offices are essential.
