Seweryn Trzyna awarded in international competition

07 of April '20

The project by Seweryn Trzyna, a student at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Arts in Poznań, was recognized in the UnSchool Copenhagen competition organized by Switch.

The competition task was to design a school of the future for children between the ages of five and twelve. The facility would be built in Copenhagen's Hekla Park and should be the opposite of typical school buildings. Its architecture is expected to modernize the education system by breaking down the physical classroom division. Participants were asked to design a system that takes into account the individual needs of each child, while being cooperative. The competition aimed to create an intergenerational, flexible learning space that can be used for any purpose. All designed facilities should provide students with a different experience in terms of form, aesthetics, color and workmanship. An important task was to take into account the natural environment and surroundings.

city of children

Seweryn Trzyna created a project entitled. "City of Children," inspired by the functioning of the city.It featurespublic and semi-public spaces, squares, parks, bodies of water and a promenade. The urban character is created by miniaturized buildings adapted for children: a city hall tower, a factory, a library, a workshop, a restaurant and greenhouses. The school is not another monumental edifice, but becomes an integral part of the landscape. The boundary between building and nature, interior and exterior, has been blurred.

modules for learning

"City of Children" goes beyond the conventional school building, the classical division into classes is abolished. The school is divided into nine thematic modules, for example, sports, art, technology, nature. The form of the building consisting of a number of repetitive modules favors any interior arrangement, which allows the separation of spaces of different character. Courtyards in each module become semi-public spaces, allowing integration and cooperation.

The building is formed by multiplexed CLT glulam frames, and their dense arrangement and axial spacing (every one meter) creates an abstract, spatial drawing interspersed with verticals of trees growing nearby. Carefully selected deciduous trees provide shade in summer and let the light pass through in winter.

Congratulations on the award!
