De-Spec
De-spec is a New York-based W/MBE design firm that is in the business of creating thoughtful, contemplative homes, boutiques and institutional projects. We successfully frame and guide the design of creative and beautiful projects through a subtractive process, with a portfolio of residential buildings, townhouses, apartments, ground-floor homes, as well as commercial and civic spaces.
Founded in 2002, the company's name "de-spec" is an acronym for "de-speculative," which at the time was an objective response to the growing trend of speculative construction, where general design is applied to all projects, and the meaning of design has changed to accumulation and addition.
With more than 20 years of experience, early de-spec projects range from designing homes from the ground up in the East Hamptons, New York, to designing internationally recognized retail brands moving into the US market. Headquartered in New York's West Chelsea arts district, the firm recently expanded to include an office in Los Angeles, California, with active projects in California, Tennessee and Mexico, as well as New York and Connecticut. De-spec is W/MBE certified.
