18 of November '21

"10 Questions to..." is a series of short interviews with architects and female architects, to whom we address the same pool of questions. In today's installment of the mini-interview, Dariusz Dudek of DD ARCHITEKCI studio talks about the most inspiring city and the most important book, design dreams and the importance of sports in maintaining life balance.

Dariusz Dudek - an architect, since 2008 cooperated and studied with Stanislaw Niemczyk, which, as he emphasizes, changed his outlook on architecture and his profession. Since 2011, he has led the DD ARCHITEKCI studio in Silesia, this year honored in the Young Creator category in the Architecture of the Year competition of the Silesian Voivodeship.

1. architecture in three words...?

a. Creation.
b. Space
c. For life.

2. the three most important buildings for you...?

a. St. Francis and St. Clare Church in Tychy designed by Stanislaw Niemczyk.
b. The Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies van der Rohe.
c. St. Benedict's Chapel designed by Peter Zumthor.

3. the most important book on architecture...?

"Thinking Architecture" by Peter Zumthor. I reread it from time to time.
It has everything you need to know to build the architecture I think.

4. most inspiring city and why...?

The city that has inspired me for years is Prague. I have been visiting it at least once a year for the past 15 years and always find something new. I find it fascinating.

5. architect with whom you would like to design something and why...?

Eduardo Souto de Moura, Shigeru Ban, Kengo Kuma, but actually I would like to sit in a small room in Tychy again, like in the old days, and design something with Stanislaw Niemczyk. Unfortunately, that will not happen in this world anymore.

6. hand drawing or computer drawing?

As Juhani Pallasmaa writes in "Thinking Hand". - exclusively hand-drawing.

7. mockup or 3D model?

I would like to write that a mock-up, but unfortunately it is already a 3D model. However, I believe that one day I will be able to afford to return to working with mockups.

8. modernism or postmodernism?

Despite all the mistakes made, it is naturally modernism. Especially the one from under the hand of Alvar Aalto.

9. working after hours or sports?

Sport for me has always been a way of life. It's the one that taught me discipline, internal dialogue and how to deal with emotions. It saves me from depression, professional burnout and alcoholism. I am addicted to it.

10 - Architecture or business?

Unfortunately, it is already the case in the world that money destroys everything of value in its path. Also architecture. Unfortunately, in order to be able to create it nowadays, I am forced to participate in the ruthless business of building in Poland. However, architecture is always the most important.
