The Principality of Modernity

02 of June '22

Księży Młyn - a historic working-class neighborhood and an icon of Lodz. How much do red brick houses have in common with contemporary settlements in the suburbs of Polish cities? Archipolo Group invites you to the exhibition, which will be held as part of Lodz Fotofestival 2022.

Księży Młyn is a factory and residential complex located on the Jasień River in Lodz. Built in the 19th century by Karol Scheibler, it was a city within a city - a self-sufficient district with industrial and residential buildings, a school, hospitals or a fire station. Today, its name is commonly associated with a settlement of famula (workers' houses) with a short street between them.

suburbia

A gate, a road, on each side a row of residential buildings. At first glance, the urban layout of the familial houses in Księży Młyn differs little from the villa-like development estates near the city. Are seemingly similar solutions equally conducive to the formation of a well-functioning community? Why do developments in the suburbs become known as "doe estates"? Is what passes for luxury in developers' advertising brochures really so? And where do modern workers live? These are the themes analyzed in the exhibition "Księże młyny" by its creators from the Archipolo group. The exhibition will consist of a series of photographs that bring out such features of settlements as repetitiveness and axiality. Identical frames and frontal perspective are to allow comparison of distances between buildings and their dimensions.
