Design that reduces noise? THE VIRTUOSO lamp collection by designer Anna Spakowska

19 of November '20

A designer lamp that absorbs sound? We present to you THE VIRTUOSO collection by Anna Spakowska. Inspired by music, its performers and the proper acoustics of a space, the designer has created functional light sculptures that can now create mood and reduce noise in your apartments as well.

Acoustic comfort is a key factor affecting the quality of sound, and therefore our satisfaction with playing or listening to music. That's why reducing noise and reverberation has become the guiding idea behind THE VIRTUOSO lamp collection. The topic of proper acoustics is becoming increasingly popular due to, among other things, the move to remote operation. Good damping and illumination of the space, promotes work and relaxation, and the interesting shape of the lamps adds character to the interiors.

The collection by Anna Spakowska consists of eight unique designs, in different color variations, with diameters ranging from 50 to 65 cm. The design is based on the transformation of the fabric, which is wool felt, into a functional sculpture. Wool is one of the best sound-absorbing materials, plus it is natural and has anti-static and fire-resistant properties. The combination of wool and metal creates a contrast between soft and smooth, shiny and matte, three-dimensional and flat, bringing the space to life.

Dobrawa Bies: How did the idea to design such an unusual lamp come about?

Anna Spakowska: In design, I am guided by the idea of functional art, that is, creating objects or activities that combine the properties of a work of art or so-called design object with functionality and practicality. In the design process, I use my experience from studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw, as well as ten years of experience working in an architectural office in Basel (Switzerland). Both art and design are very close to me. My goal is to create an object or activity that could exist independently as a painting, sculpture or decoration. At the same time, its functionality is important, as well as solving part of the problem, which could be, for example, noise, lack of privacy, monotony of the environment. The lamp project has been on my to do list for a long time.

Dobrawa Bies: Where did you get your inspiration from?

Anna Spakowska: I have been using felt in my projects for more than six years. During this time I have managed to become well acquainted with this material and learn its greatest advantages, and possibilities. The project of THE VIRTUOSO lamps is a continuation of my previous projects of Acoustic Panels, the idea of which was born from the search for three-dimensionality in a two-dimensional material - paper. At some point, the limitations of the properties of paper advanced me to felt. That was in 2013, and since then the process has undergone quite a revolution, and the inspiration is always the material itself.

Dobrawa Bies: How did the design work go?

Anna Spakowska: If five out of a hundred sketches are good, it is a very good result. In the same way, in the design process everything is based on repeated attempts and measurements, on constant testing. At the same time, a very important part of this process is the freedom and openness on the part of the designer, which is even based on intuitive work with the material, that is, allowing the material itself to highlight its qualities and its uniqueness.

Dobrawa Bies: What are the reasons for the shape, choice of colors and materials?

Anna Spakowska: The shape of THE VIRTUOSO lamps stems from the possibilities offered by wool felt. It is the only fabric that offers the possibility to create spatial forms in such an easy and graceful way. The combination of wool and metal, on the other hand, creates a timeless pair of contrasts in which the character of each material is revealed - a combination that emphasizes the uniqueness and beauty of each. The lamps are available in a variety of colors, but the typical one is classic gray, which will fit into any interior. It is worth noting that the typical gray of wool felt looks exceptionally noble.

Dobrawa Bies: Who are the users of THE VIRTUOSO?

Anna Spakowska: The lamps were created for people who appreciate beauty, functionality and quality of materials. Environmental friendliness is also an important aspect, as well as the fact that each lamp is made entirely by hand. The lamps will work well in public spaces, such as an office, study or restaurant, as well as at home. I think that in the current situation, in which many of us spend much more time at home and need to adapt the space for comfortable work, it is worth investing in design elements that are both functional and inspiring. Elements that create a beautiful complement to the character of our home.

Dobrawa Bies: Thank you for the interview.
