Results of the competition to develop a concept for the arrangement of the permanent archaeological exhibition and the permanent ethnographic exhibition

organizer: Silesian Museum in Bytom

The Silesian Museum in Bytom has announced the results of a competition to develop a concept for the arrangement of two permanent exhibitions. The best design for the archaeological exhibition was made by ART FM studio, and for the ethnographic one by Koza Nostra Studio.

purpose

The purpose of the Competition is to select from among the submitted Competition works, substantively justified, aesthetic, attractive and functional: one concept of artistic arrangement for the permanent archaeological exhibition and one concept of artistic arrangement for the permanent ethnographic exhibition at the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom.

The subject of the Competition is to develop a concept for the arrangement of the exhibitions based on the attached their substantive scenarios found in appendices 2 and 3, which will present a coherent idea with them, and to submit them in the form of a competition work.

terms and conditions

Thepermanent archaeological exhibition should realize the basic objectives of the prepared exhibition, such as familiarizing the audience with the archaeological heritage of Upper Silesia and showing what archaeologists do and the importance of their activities not only for science, but for society and ordinary people. The exhibition is intended to be universal, for a wide audience: specialists, enthusiasts, lovers of the oldest history, for children, adults, seniors, pupils, students, people with dysfunctions, as well as an audience from abroad. The exhibition should present itself in a modern and interesting way, including through the use of multimedia systems, the largest collection of archaeological artefacts in Upper Silesia, with over 350,000 objects. Multimedia are to be supporting elements of the exhibition, not dominant ones. The exhibition will have a popular-scientific character and should show the prehistory of the region in such a way that the viewer acquires the necessary information. Due to the enormous amount of material and subject matter, the rich archaeological heritage and the oldest history of Upper Silesia will necessarily be presented synthetically.

Thepermanent ethnographic exhibition should present annual customs according to the seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter), into which economic and professional activities and the cycles of human life (birth, childhood, marriage, old age, death) will be woven. The idea is that it can be visited in its entirety or according to one of three thematic paths:

  • annual rituals,
  • cycles of human life and family rituals,
  • work and leisure.

The exhibition will cover the area of Upper Silesia, from the late 19th century to the 1970s, both agricultural, pastoral and industrial.

The works selected in the competition, in part or in whole, will become the basis for the development of design documentation, enabling the realization of the permanent exhibitions in question at the Upper Silesian Museum in Bytom.

The permanent exhibitions will be realized in one building, on two separate floors. Detailed assumptions for the exhibition halls can be found in Appendices 4, 5 and 6.

The assumed cost of the work in terms of implementation for each of the permanent exhibitions that are the subject of the competition, based on the winning competition work, cannot exceed PLN 1,860,000.00 net.

The condition for participation in the competition is:

  • that the participant has experience in the form of completing, within the last 5 years prior to the deadline for submission of the competition works, at least two services involving the development of a design for the visual arrangement of museum exhibitions with an area of at least 300m2 each, completed by the ordering party,
  • possession by the participant of architectural design authorization without limitations, together with registration in the appropriate Chamber of Architects.
