In search of good climate change adaptation practices

29 of February '24

Fighting the effects of climate change is very often pushed aside. Adaptation, however, is extremely important, because regardless of global trends, we will struggle with droughts interspersed with floods or heat waves.

As part of our #ReportThursday series, we present documents, reports and guides on architecture, cities and local government that are certainly worth publicizing and promoting. This time we present the "Catalogue of good adaptation practices" published by the Institute of Environmental Protection - National Research Institute.

Climate change is happening, regardless of whether home-grown experts on social media will claim otherwise. Heat waves in cities will threaten mainly elderly people, but not only. Temporary droughts will not only be a problem for agriculture, but also for cities. "Ferocious weather," as climate scientist Friederike Otto called it, threatens us all. How to prepare for it?

Reducing emissions and trapping carbon dioxide is one side of the coin, the other is to adapt our environment here and now, to the inevitable changes. The problem very often is ignorance - not only a lack of awareness about the changes, but also a lack of awareness about the application of solutions. With help came the experts and experts of the EIA-PIB.

The catalog is available on the website of the Institute of Environmental Protection - National Research Institute.

the most important thing is to find a good model

"Catalog of good adaptation practices" developed within the framework of the Klimada 2.0. project is a continuation of the manuals addressed to experts and local government officials. The barrier to the introduction of positive solutions in cities is often not only a financial or legal issue, but precisely the barrier of lack of knowledge and tools to implement good solutions - this is why the guide was created.

The catalog contains many solutions to be applied not only in the context of the city, but also in forests, the coastal strip or agriculture. Each solution includes both a description of the main objectives, the sectors it refers to, and the implementation process. Good practices are supplemented with examples of implementation from around the world.

każde rozwiązanie zawiera zapis dotyczący celów, sektorów oddziaływania ale również sposób implementacji

Each solution includes a record of the objectives, sectors of impact and the method of implementation

Too little, too slow and the wrong way?

Climate action in the face of the challenges faced by a world racked by crises puts the issues of combating climate change in many places in question. However, adaptation issues will not pass us by - solutions are indicated in a catalog issued by the EIA-PIB. The #ThursdayReport series from the beginning was intended to help popularize good sources of information - so we hope that Polish spaces will not become hostage to our ignorance.

The catalog is available on the website of the Institute of Environmental Protection - National Research Institute.
