Meditation at Lake Bezdibene

18 of October '19

Anna Jankowska, a graduate of Bialystok University of Technology, designed forest cabins that allow for contemplation of nature and tranquility. The facilities are located in the heart of an old-growth forest by the picturesque Bezdibene Lake.

The shape of the proposed buildings is derived from traditional Latvian wooden architecture with steep gabled roofs. The raw wood of the facades and interiors is altered by weathering and the passage of time, giving the sharp, orderly form of the cabins a softer touch.

levels of meditation

Divided into three zones, the facilities allow relaxation and contemplation of nature, while a large glass wall facilitates meditation inside the cabin. A terrace extending above the surface of the ground and the surface of the lake allows for closer contact with nature, involving all the senses. The highest level of the cabin is designed for tranquility and concentration of thoughts. The limited amount of light coming through the triangular skylight is conducive to creating a spiritual atmosphere. In addition, energy-saving LED lighting is proposed in the interiors.

The cabins are self-sufficient and simple in construction. Their frame construction consists of main and secondary beams and refers to the traditional construction of the region. The structures can be founded on prefabricated concrete blocks, and their soaring, undercut form allows them to be placed in narrow spaces, such as between trees. The area directly above the ground is dedicated to technical equipment - a heat and water pump and an inverter (the southern elevation was made of photovoltaic glass).

The design of the Meditation Cabins made it to the finals of a competition organized by BeeBreeders, and was awarded in the international Vectorworks competition in the Architecture category.
