A new look for the Pomeranian Philharmonic. Kozien Architects authors of the winning design.

02 of June '20

We know the results of the competition for the expansion of the Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz. Out of 7 submitted projects, the jury has chosen the concept by Marek Kozień, Magdalena Kozień-Woźniak and Katarzyna Kozień-Kornecka from the Kozień Architekci studio in Cracow. Congratulations!

The competition announced last autumn concerned the development of an architectural and urban planning concept, renovation and expansion of the Pomeranian Philharmonic building. Work on adapting the Philharmonic's infrastructure to modern requirements has been going on for several years. The building, which is reaching its seventieth year, today provides neither artists nor guests with adequate facilities.

Pomeranian Philharmonic in a new version

Thejury, chaired by Romuald Loegler and composed of: Ryszard Jurkowski (architect, reporting judge), Cezary Nelkowski (Pomeranian Philharmonic representative andits deputy director), Jerzy Gurawski (architect), Antoni Kozielski (architect), Maria Jankowska-Olbratowska (SARP Bydgoszcz branch), Katarzyna Łaskarzewska-Karczmarz (architekkat of the city of Bydgoszcz), Sławomir Marcysiak (municipal conservator of monuments), Olgierd Sobkowiak (representative of the Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship), awarded first place to Koznień Architekci studio from Cracow. Responsible for the architectural design are Marek Kozień, Magdalena Kozień-Woźniak and Katarzyna Kozień-Kornecka, in cooperation with Joanna Filipek, Jakub Dziewoński and Jitendra Buragohain. Agata Zachariasz and Krystyna Szar are responsible for thelandscaping, and Tadeusz Kamisinski is responsible for the acoustics. Visualizations were created by Rafał Barnaś of Unique Vision Studio.

The winning studio is known for its other projects to expand galleries and museums, concert halls and theaters, e.g. the New Theater in Warsaw, the Polish Theater in Szczecin, the Capitol Musical Theater in Wroclaw and the A. Malawski Philharmonic in Rzeszow.

According to the jury, the first prize was awarded for:

Unquestionably the most apt solution to the design task, proposing a creation that achieves a balance, extremely difficult in the given location, between a highly satisfactory fulfillment of the object's program requirements and its spatial inclusion in the arrangements of the local zoning plan in force. [...] A highly successful procedure is the formation of functions in such a way as to ensure that the main entrance to the Philharmonic's historically functioning building will continue to remain so, serving the entire functional program - both the existing symphony hall and the new chamber hall located on the main axis of the building in the basement. From the viewer's point of view, this is of paramount importance in facilities of this type. Despite its underground location, the chamber hall's uniqueness is added by indirect daylight illumination, oozing from the glazing in the square's floor through the hall's lycra-shaped bypass.

In its new design, the venue will gain a chamber hall for about 350 people, an expanded foyer with space to exhibit a collection of paintings, tapestries and sculptures, and a new food and beverage area. In addition, plans call for the construction of underground parking and a rehearsal hall for the full orchestra. The new part of the building will be connected to the existing edifice, which will be modernized.
