Honorable mention for the project of the Institute of Film Art in Szczecin

In the category of master's degree, Aleksandra Kmieć received an honorable mention. The jury awarded the student the prize for proposing a formally and functionally interesting revitalization of surface parts in Szczecin. The object designed by Aleksandra is located in the area of Lasztownia - Szczecin's river island. The priority for the author was to create a new urban fabric, functionally diverse and attractive for residents and investors on the waterfront post-industrial areas.

development of waterfront areas

The site chosen by the author occupies an area of 2.8 hectares and is located between Celna and Energetyków Streets and the waters of the Oder River and the Green Canal. Due to the large area of the plot, the project was divided into two parts. The first includes in its scope a residential and commercial development in the northern part of the site, and the second part is a detailed concept for the Film Art Institute. The entire premise was elevated above ground level. Such a procedure made it possible to align the ground-level development with the level of Energetyków Street and to avoid negative effects during the rise of the water table.

In the first floors of the designed buildings, the designer proposed multi-car garages, and on the side of the Gdynia Boulevard, numerous catering establishments. Above level 0, the student has designed a quarter-quarter development, shaped in terraces. These buildings house residential units, apartments and accommodation for the Film Art Institute. Due to the high intensity of the development, recreational green areas were placed on the roofs of the buildings.

Film Art Institute as a cultural center

The Film Art Institute building was built on a square plan with a side of 50 meters. The central part of the building is a massive staircase. A diagonal line divides the body and functional layout into two parts. The first of these houses three, different-sized cinema halls. The second part of the building consists of three floors with multifunctional mobile conference rooms, workshops, sound and recording studios and a lobby with a café open to the city square. Optimal insolation of the rooms is provided by an extensive skylight located in the center of the building above the staircase.

To give expression to the block, the author raised its two opposite corners. The east corner, with its glazing, opens to a spacious plaza, creating a viewing foreground for the Institute. The western corner faces the Oder River and the Green Canal. In this part there is a stepped public space, roofed by overhanging parts of the cinema halls.
In the northern wall of the building Aleksandra Kmieć created a gap to accommodate a staircase, leading from the city square directly to the building's roof. The usable roof makes it possible to hold film screenings in the summer months and is a good vantage point from which to observe the surrounding buildings and the most important monuments of Szczecin.

The ground floor was made using reinforced concrete technology, while the subsequent floors were made using steel construction. The facade of the Institute is made with ventilated technology. The dark wooden cladding refers to the old wooden buildings of Lasztownia, while the diagonal arrangement of the boards emphasizes the modern character of the building.
