Recruitment for the THEORY competition extended! New edition of Stefan Kurylowicz Foundation programs

The Stefan Kurylowicz Foundation has extended the deadline for submissions to the Theory Competition to February 15, 2022. On the other hand, the call for applications for the seventh edition of the PRACTICE Scholarship in its new format - a three-stage competition combined with a stationary, two-day "Workshop with a Mentor" - expired on January 15 this year.

The purpose of the Stefan Kurylowicz Foundation's programs is to support the work of young, creative and inquiring architects, to strengthen in them the attitude of responsibility for architectural and urban order, to attempt to recognize contemporary problems of public space and to develop bold solutions to these problems that take into account the needs of local communities. The PRACTICE Fellowship and the THEORY Competition were conceived as complementary initiatives that not only seek a fresh view of architecture, but also a new language that would be able to convey this view to the audience.

THEORY Competition

TheTHEORY competition is a program under which the winning text, approaching the subject of the relationship between architecture and culture in an interesting and innovative way, will be published in the form of a bilingual book in the series "Architecture of Culture - Culture of Architecture." The competition seeks original diagnoses and new solutions.

Competition entries can be submitted in any form: a manifesto or essay, a dissertation or presentation, a scientific analysis or a letter, author's graphics accompanying the content will also be an added advantage. The winner of the THEORY Competition will receive a prize of PLN 3,500 in addition to publication.

The works will be judged by the jury of the FSK TE ORIA Competition, consisting of: Ewa P. Porębska (chairwoman), Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, Grzegorz Piątek, Jacek Purchla, Bogna Świątkowska, Marta A. Urbańska and Piotr Sarzyński.

Works can be submitted until February 15, 2022, and the results are scheduled to be announced on April 4, 2022.

PRACTICE Scholarship

ThePRACTICE F ellowship is a three-stage program aimed at finding the most interesting ideas for improving the quality of public space in a designated place in Poland. In 2022 it will be Gdansk, and the site of the hall and slipway complex in the former Gdansk Shipyard.

Stage I

In the first stage, the scholarship jury will select up to 18 people from the submitted portfolios, who will qualify to participate in a stationary, weekend, two-day "Workshop with a Mentor." Led by Piotr Lorens (Mentor), Lucyna Nyka (Dean of WA PG), Rainer Mahlamäki (SAFA) and Tomasz Sowinski (Synergy 99), the workshop will be led by Iza Burda (WA PG), Marcin Goncikowski (WA PW, K&A) and Ewa Kurylowicz (Chair of the Foundation Board).

Portfolios could be submitted until January 15, 2022.

Stage II

In Stage II, the three best solutions developed at the workshop (individual or team) will be awarded monthly scholarships of PLN 2,000 each to develop the idea into a preliminary architectural concept. Then, from the three projects selected for the finals, the jury will select one winning project.

Stage III

In the third stage of the program, the selected work will be refined for 4 months with a scholarship of PLN 10 thousand, and its authors - designers, designers or a team - will work on developing the project in all aspects described in the regulations. The whole project will be presented in autumn 2022 in Gdansk.

Entries to the competition will be judged by the PRACTICE FSK competition jury, consisting of: Jakub Waclawek, Dorota Szlachcic, Aleksandra Wasilkowska, Konrad Grabowiecki, Maciej Frąckowiak and Agnieszka Olędzka.
