Model mountain shelter on Luban. Competition results

16 of December '20

Today, December 16, the results of a one-stage, implementation competition for the best concept of a model mountain hostel on Luban were announced during a remote press conference. This competition, commissioned by the Polish Tourist Society, was organized by the Cracow branch of the Association of Polish Architects.

Ninety works were submitted for the competition. The jury was positively surprised not only by the number of submitted projects, but also by their quality and high level of presentation.

Grzegorz Biedroń, president of the Malopolska Tourist Organization, who was present at the conference, announced that in the next, next year's project to build tourist shelters, he also hopes to cooperate with the Association of Polish Architects and organize the competition. The president of PTTK, Jerzy Kapłon, admitted that although PTTK is a traditional society, the competition's designs allowed a different perspective on the role of a tourist shelter, while Marek Kaszyński, president of the Cracow branch of SARP, reminded that the best way to choose a design for a public space is through an architectural competition.

The jury, composed of Katarzyna Kozień-Kornecka (chairman), Paweł Wieczorek (referee), Marcin Brataniec (SARP Krakow), Tomasz Studniarek (SARP Katowice), Stanisław Deńko (Małopolska Regional Chamber of Architects of the Republic of Poland), Jerzy Kalarus (president of PTTK Karpaty Company), Natalia Figiel (PTTK Central Centre for Mountain Tourism), Witold Kozłowski(Marshal of the Malopolska Region), Grzegorz Biedroń (President of the Malopolska Tourist Organization, Councillor of the Malopolska Region) and Marcin Buczek-Palczynski (Secretary, SARP Krakow) deliberated for two days to unanimously award three works and grant three honorable mentions.

awards

The1st prize went to the project of the team consisting of: Sławomir Janas Pracownia ES-JOT, Bartosz Pionka Pracownia Architektoniczna and Architect Michał Włoskowicz. As we read in the justification of the jury, the first prize was awarded for the proposal to refer to the archetype of a mountain shelter.

The proposed form brings the tradition of building mountain shelters from the past into the present and future. The simple and expressive, yet rational form can become a sign of place. The way the site is developed without excessive interference leaves it natural, friendly to arriving hikers. Great sensitivity to the relationship with the environment and understanding of human needs is a measure of the value of this work. The new form located on the site of the former hostel pays homage to the history of the site.

As the chairwoman of the jury, Katarzyna Kozień-Kornecka, added after the verdict was announced, the awarded work exceptionally respected the rank of the place, and the modern mass with material referring to the traditions of the region, seemingly quite aggressive or brutal, turned out to be ideally suited to the surroundings of the clearing. The Jury's attention was also drawn by the simplicity of the mass, pro-environmental solutions, as well as mobility and flexibility of modeling of internal spaces.

The 2nd prize
was awarded to the proposal by Michal Bekas of BOAA studio, prepared in cooperation with Iga Stanislawska and Michal Orlikowski
.

The award was given for the apt and synthetically processed form of the building related to the character of native architecture. The geometry of the body, the materials used, with their simplicity, inscribe the hostel in the mountain landscape, and also refer to the features of the former, no longer existing hostel in this place. Functional solutions fully correspond to the set program elements and their view relations to their closer and further surroundings.

of STUDIO4SPACE architectural studio, Julian Wandzilak, Katarzyna Przybyło, Tomasz Obara and Martyna Mądry for:

progressive solutions, involving the use of the genius loci of the existing foundations of the former hostel, on which the new building is partly supported, partly levitated. The composition, which combines the old with the new, creates a distinctive, symbolic architecture dedicated to the site.
