BBGK Architects for the University of Warsaw

01 of April '20

The results of the competition were announced yesterday on the official Facebook profile of the Society of Polish Architects. Due to pandemonium, it was decided that they could not be presented in public, by opening the author's envelopes at the SARP headquarters. Therefore, a decision was made to conduct a webcast - the Secretary of the Competition Jury Marek Szreniawski was authorized to do so.

The competition was co-organized by the Association of Polish Architects and the University of Warsaw. Its purpose was to select an architecturaland urban design concept for the construction of a scientific and didactic building and development of the site at 2/4 Bednarska Street in Warsaw.

I place

The first prize in the amount of 50 thousand PLN and an invitation to negotiate a sole-source contract for the detailed development of the competition work was awarded to BBGK Architekci studio. Author team: Wojciech Kotecki, Konrad Grabowiecki, Jan Belina-Brzozowski. Author cooperation: Aneta Kulesza, Agnieszka Roś, Martyna Duś, Dawid Roszkowski, Filip Strzelecki, Weronika Urban, Aleksandra Cassino, Aleks Kacprzak, Wojciech Pruszkowski, Bartosz Marcol, Łukasz Bałaga.

The project was recognized for fitting into the existing architecture of the campus and incorporating greenery into the structure of the building. By shaping the form of the building, the architects managed to relate the concept to the context of the place - the Mariensztat development and the building of the former Bath House. The idea of the main entrance being an element that closes Mariensztat Street, as well as the multifaceted and multi-faceted façade gained recognition. Inside the building, the architects created an agora, thus referring to the context of the intersection of the axis of the aforementioned street and the Łaźnia building. The multi-level structure of the hall can foster student bonding. The designers created a system that allows for free shaping of the space, which additionally allows for the distribution of green courtyards and the inflow of daylight. BBGK Architects were concerned with minimizing the carbon footprint, a building structure open to change and improving the quality of student life.

2nd place

The second prize worth 35 thousand PLN was awarded to the WXCA studio. The author team:
Paweł Grodzicki, Szczepan Wroński, Andrzej Bulanda, Michał Starzyński, Karol Perkowski, Paweł Słupski, Emil Kotowski, Maciej Czechowski.

The project was appreciated for the functionaland utility solutions of the building. The shape of the mass corresponds with Mariensztat Street, on the extension of which a multifunctional passage has been introduced, and with the historic Bath House. Recognition was given to the simple forms of expression introduced by the designers, creating the character of the block, including through the appropriate selection of window proportions and their rhythm on the facades. Very well solved were the common spaces, helping to create a community.

III place

Third prize of PLN 20,000 was awarded to STELMACH I PARTNERS ARCHITECTONIC OFFICE. Author team: Bolesław Stelmach, Marek Zarzeczny, Rafał Szmigielski, Zbigniew Wypych.

The concept was appreciated for the idea of realizing the idea of "culture-nature" by, among other things, using the existing biotope, thanks to which non-obvious spaces possible for didactic and scientific use were created. In the expressive and concise form of the volume, the architects managed to lay out all the functions necessary in the facility. Despite the bold form, the project fits aesthetically into the topography of Mariensztat Street and the surrounding area. The jury's recognition was gained by the idea to incorporate the existing greenery into the creation of semi-public interiors.

distinctions

The first honorable mention, worth 15 thousand PLN, went to TEKTURA architectural studio , Barbara Kozielewska. Author team: Barbara Kozielewska, Mateusz Kluczek, Michał Kozielewski, Ewa Sowińska, Antoni Murza-Mucha, Przemysław Godlewski, Emilia Rakowska, Marianne Dawid.

The work draws attention with its interesting architectural mass, but the form of shed roofs, not found in this part of Warsaw - being a historically alien form - may be associated more with a cultural institution than a university. Nevertheless, the individual shape gave a unique character to the building, making it an interesting addition to this district of the city. The jury's doubts were raised by the color of the facade - white in the long term, especially near Wislostrada, seems hard to maintain.

The second honorable mention in the amount of PLN 15,000 was awarded to BDR Architects studio. The author team: Konrad Basan, Pawel Dadok, Maria Roj, in cooperation with Aleksandra Nowotniak.

The court appreciated the project for its ingenious functional and utility solutions. The building consists of two separate blocks connected by a glass passage on the axis of Mariensztat Street - such a division is both an advantage and a disadvantage of the project. The strength of this solution is the organization of two parts - the southern wing is dedicated to students and their free integration. The center is formed by an impressive cascading staircase. The northern wing is dedicated to teachingand research rooms that require quiet and concentration. There are halls and a library overlooking the Old Town. A weakness is the high cost of the glass arcade.
