"Cross section of cinema!" - exhibition at Warsaw's ZODIAK open to the public

20 of May '20

The opening of the exhibition "Cinema section!" was planned for March. The situation forced the organizers to carry out part of the program in a virtual space, but as of today (20.05) in the Warsaw Architecture Pavilion ZODIAK, adjacent to the oldest operating cinema in Warsaw - Atlantic, you can see an exhibition dedicated to the urban tabernacles of the tenth muse. You are welcome!

What was cinema design in the past and what does it look like now? Warsaw's iconic cinemas - Atlantic, Iluzjon and the now-defunct Skarpa - are the venues from which the whole story begins. Who designed them, what did they give to the city and residents, how did they adapt to the new reality or why did they not survive?

The exhibition at ZODIAK, which aims to present the architecture of Warsaw's cinemas in the context of the changing needs and expectations of viewers, resulting from socio-cultural, economic and technological changes, will also feature a story about the phenomenon and popularity of multiplexes, and will present cross-sections of cinemas, their projections, old photographs and excerpts from the Polish Film Chronicle.

I'm very excited about the exhibition on cinemas. They were often designed by excellent architects. Some of these buildings have survived only in our memories and old photos. They were demolished to free up plots of land for large commercial developments. The only thing that survived from the Moskwa cinema was the artificial stone lions that stood on Pulawska Street in front of the Europlex - an office building with a service arcade. The Skarpa cinema has also disappeared. Fortunately, the Capital survived, now the Iluzjon, where we can watch not only good movies, but also admire the class of architecture of this cinema," says Marlena Happach, City Architect.

Since April, the program accompanying the exhibition has been running online and will partially remain so(here). The pavilion will be open during limited hours, with a limited number of visitors.
