Eco-friendly furniture system PIN by design students

22 of April '20

Magdalena Pawelec, Aleksandra Witaszczyk and Konrad Dybicki from the Faculty of Design at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts designed a simple and mobile furniture system, ideal for a student lifestyle.

PIN is an eco-friendly furniture system created with the changing needs of modern society in mind. Student lifestyles, modern nomadism, frequent moving and temporary renting are changing the way we approach the objects we own. PIN furniture does not restrict users - thanks to its lightweight and easy to assemble design, it can be taken almost anywhere.

construction made of natural materials

The PIN furniture system was made from natural materials - pine wood, cotton surplus and string. The designers chose renewable raw materials, sourced and processed locally in Poland. Standardized, easy-to-assemble semi-finished products - scantlings and wooden rollers - are readily available in home improvement stores and do not require starting an additional production line. No environmentally harmful substances were used in the creation of the furniture - the wood was treated with natural oil, making the set fully recyclable.

fabric shelves and intuitive assembly

In addition, the amount of used wood was reduced by replacing the shelves with fabric. The strips of fabric have a utilitarian function, as well as a structural one - they stabilize the furniture. With the help of this solution, the furniture gained lightness, which also translates into ease of transport and safety of use.
The unfolded set takes up little space, we can transport it in flat packs. The furniture will easily fit into a passenger car. Assembly does not require any additional tools - it is intuitive and consists in simple folding and tying the fabric tensioning cords.

economical and ecological solution

The system is an economical solution that meets most of the basic needs of furnishing an apartment. The use of natural materials, simple form and low cost of production make the PIN fit well into the trends and assumptions of modern design, at a time when ecology is not an additional advantage, but an obligatory condition. The family of furniture can be easily expanded with new elements.

The project was created in the studio of Prof. Grzegorz Niwiński at the Design Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 2019, the furniture was presented in the finals of the "Młodzi na Start ELLE Decoration" competition at Gdynia Design Days and at the "Młodzi na Start" exhibition at Domoteka in Warsaw.
