Adam Jankowski - REMIZ_A, research station and hotel in Lazy.

24 of April '20

Adam Jankowski, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Architecture, Poznan University of Technology, created a design for a research station near the Lazy reserve. The shape of the facilities was taken from nature - the nests built by the remiza bird.

unexplored wildlife

Wet forests and reed beds in the vicinity of Lake Jamno are a refuge for many rare species of birds, amphibians and reptiles. The progressive degradation of the environment by the negative impact of human activities is the biggest threat to the organisms living there. The location of the scientific station near the Łazy nature reserve is expected to facilitate the implementation of research grants in one of the least explored areas of Poland.

architecture amidst reed beds

The main idea of the project is to create nature-inspired architecture and place it in the landscape context of the site. The most important goal of the new structure is to enable research grants on the region's flora and fauna, combined with the promotion of Western Pomerania. Important for the project is to go beyond the boundaries of the village of Osieki and attempt to present an ecological strategy for the biodiverse area. The scientific station of the Łazy reserve is to be the center of a broader spatial arrangement, in the form of the Jamno Lake observation trail. The project would consist of designated viewpoints and a sequence of walking paths, overhanging the reed beds.

firehouse nest an inspiration for the architect

The direct inspiration for the form, function and construction of the designed fifteen units of the science station comes from the nest of the remiza. A small bird that lives on the shores of Lake Jamno builds nests suspended from tree branches. The braided cocoon consists of an entrance corridor and an inner nesting space. The idea of the project is to adapt solutions taken from nature to human needs. According to this principle, hotel units are suspended toa spatial structure imitating a tree branch, analogous to the nests built by the bird architect.
