How to maintain urban greenery during drought? Webinar

If you are wondering how to help urban vegetation during the prevailing drought, you are invited to a free webinar organized by the editors of the magazine "Urban Greening" and the Board of Urban Greening in Krakow.

The meeting will be held under the theme "Maintaining urban greenery during drought - practitioners for practitioners". Participants in the webinar will learn about proven and effective solutions, case studies from Polish cities and proposals for action.

During the event, during an online lecture, specialists from urban greenery managements from selected Polish cities will answer questions based on concrete examples and solutions:

  • does the city's existing urban greenery maintenance plans change due to the drought?
  • what specific measures are taken by individual cities in connection with drought?
  • what technical solutions are worth using for rainwater management?
  • do drought response measures necessitate changes in budgeted activities?
  • Flower meadows and extensive lawn maintenance, natural beds of undergrowth plants, is this enough to combat drought?
  • Tree watering, what to pay attention to?
  • blue-green infrastructure in cities - what actions are worth taking?
  • what educational or community activation actions are undertaken by individual cities in the context of combating the effects of drought?

How is Krakow coping with the drought?

Also scheduled is a lecture entitled. "Krakow's greenery in times of drought - actions of the Board of Urban Greenery in Krakow" and in it:

  • flower meadows,
  • watering trees,
  • LifeUrbanGreen project in the face of drought,
  • blue-green infrastructure - planned activities of the ZZM in Krakow together with the new municipal unit Klimat Energia and Water Management in Krakow,
  • first irrigation systems in ZZM investments in Krakow.

The meeting will be led by Łukasz Pawlik an experienced local government employee. He has been involved with Krakow's greenery all his life, first as an inspector and then as the head of the Environmental Protection Department of the Krakow City Hall where he dealt with issues of greenery protection, and currently in ZZM he is responsible for its maintenance. Since last January, he has also performed the duties of the Municipal Landscape Architect in Krakow.

actions taken by Wroclaw in connection with the drought

The next meeting will be chaired by Ewa Partyka from the Wroclaw ZZM, in charge of coordinating the implementation of tasks related to the ongoing maintenance of green areas, planting of plants and tree protection processes in investment processes. Since last year, she has been a member of the Ecology and Greenery Council appointed by the Mayor of Wroclaw for the sustainable development and expansion and protection of green areas in Wroclaw. The speaker will address such topics as:

  • extensive maintenance of urban greenery, including urban meadows,
  • establishment of flower meadows,
  • irrigation of plants, watering of trees,
  • investment micro-retention activities: unsealing pavement, directing runoff, establishing rain gardens,
  • educational activities and dissemination of activities related to water management.

Katowice's green projects

Magdalena Bieladeputy director at ZZM in Katowice, member and inspector of the Polish Society of Tree Surgeons NOT and the Polish Green Roofs Association will talk about:

  • technical solutions related to rainwater management,
  • the use of permeable surfaces in Katowice's parks and playgrounds,
  • mowing schedule.

resident participation

Jakub Paduch coordinator of the 2020 drought action in Lodz, representative of the Department of Ecology and Climate in the local municipality. The speaker will talk about how the city can involve residents and local businesses in the fight against d rought, while also promoting awareness of climate change and care for greenery.
