International VELUX Award 2020 - registration extended until April 15!

30 of March '20

Architecture students who would like to participate in the International VELUX Award 2020, but have not had time to register, still have time to do so. This is because the deadline for registration has been pushed back to April 15. This is the ninth edition of the largest global architecture competition, which has been very popular among Polish students from the beginning.

IVA 2020

I'm happy to see that the International VELUX Award competition meets with great interest among Polish students. They see a chance to express themselves, their ideas inspired by daylight, and to make a name for themselves among the international group of young architects. This is an important step on the path of their future careers," says Monika Kupska-Kupis, an architect with VELUX Poland.

After registration, students will have until June 15 to submit their designs. And entries can be submitted in two categories - "Natural Light in Buildings" and "Natural Light Research."

In July 2020, the jury will select two winners from each of the five regions defined by the International Union of Architects:

  1. Western Europe,
  2. Eastern Europe and the Middle East,
  3. Americas,
  4. Asia and Oceania,
  5. Africa.

The ten regional winners will present their projects to the jury in person at the World Architecture Festival. Then a jury of world-renowned architects will select one global winner in each of the competition categories.

In the current edition, the jury is represented by:

  • Odile Decq (France),
  • Sebastián Adamo (Argentina),
  • Nóra Demeter (United States of America),
  • Juri Troy (Austria)
  • Martin Pors Jepsen (Denmark) - vice president of global product management at VELUX.

It is worth remembering that students can compete individually or in a group that includes people representing other majors as well. However, having a faculty mentor is key.

Participation in the international competition means both prestige and cash prizes for students. The grand prize in each of the two categories ("Natural Light in Buildings" and "Natural Light Research") is €5,000 (€4,000 for the student and1,000 euros for the mentor), while the prizes for the best entries in the regions within each category are 1,250 euros (1,000 euros for the student and 250 euros for the mentor).

The competition is organized in close cooperation with the International Union of Architects (UIA). It has grown to become the largest global event of its kind for architecture students. Since its first edition in 2004, some 12,000 students from 59 countries have participated, submitting more than 5,000 projects.
