Recuperation as part of sustainable design - how Alnor air-handling units support green building certification

19 of August '25

In sustainable design, every element of a building matters - from the choice of materials to the technical systems that affect the energy balance and occupant comfort.

Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery is a key component of high energy efficiency today, and a properly selected unit can realistically support the process of obtaining environmental certification.

Alnor's PremAIR, SlimAIR, MinistAIR or FlatAIR recuperators combine advanced technology, design flexibility and proven efficiency, providing a valuable tool for architects and designers.

recuperation in the service of sustainable architecture

Modern construction combines aesthetics, functionality and concern for the environment. Recuperation has become a pillar of environmentally friendly design, especially in investments striving for high scores in BREEAM, LEED or WELL systems. A properly designed mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery reduces energy losses, provides a constant supply of fresh air and maintains a stable microclimate - without compromising comfort or energy efficiency.

heat recovery as the key to efficiency

Heat recovery involves the transfer of energy from exhaust air to supply air, significantly reducing a building's heating and cooling needs. In reality, this means lower operating costs and a smaller carbon footprint of the investment. In certification systems, this parameter is directly linked to scoring in terms of energy efficiency and indoor environmental quality.

PremAIR - compact air handling unit with high efficiency

PremAIR is a line of recuperative air handling units designed for residential buildings where high energy efficiency and ease of integration into the design are important. The units achieve heat recovery efficiencies of up to 93.1%, and an optional enthalpy exchanger also allows moisture to be recovered, improving comfort during the heating season.

PremAIR features energy-efficient EC fans, Free-cooling and Free-heating functions, and a modulating by-pass for natural cooling during transitional periods. The foamed polypropylene (EPP) housing provides high thermal and acoustic insulation, and the light weight (35 kg) significantly facilitates installation - including in retrofit facilities.

Control is via a mobile app (Android/iOS), and integration with CO₂ and humidity sensors allows full automation of operation depending on room conditions. Compliance with ErP2018 requirements and testing in accordance with EN 13141-7 confirm the high quality and suitability for projects seeking environmental certification.

SlimAIR - a flexible solution for different objects

SlimAIR is an air handling unit that combines high heat recovery efficiency - up to 95.2% - with a wide capacity range of 250 to 1000 m³/h. This makes it suitable for use in apartments, single-family homes and commercial buildings.

SlimAIR's design allows it to be installed in three positions: horizontal, vertical or under the ceiling (250-400 models), giving architects the freedom to adapt the unit to the technical conditions of the project. The EPP casing provides excellent acoustic and thermal insulation with low weight, which translates into ease of transport and installation.

As standard, SlimAIR is equipped with EC fans with high dispatchable compression and a built-in electric heater to protect the exchanger from freezing. An optional enthalpy exchanger supports moisture recovery, which can earn extra points in WELL and BREEAM certifications. Control is possible from the app or automatically via wireless air quality sensors.

Support in the certification process

PremAIR and SlimAIR fit the BREEAM, LEED and WELL certification criteria in the areas of energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and thermal comfort. High heat recovery efficiency, the ability to recover moisture, the use of energy-efficient components and automatic control of equipment operation allow to raise the project's rating in the certification process, while supporting its environmentally friendly nature.

A new standard in design

Efficient recuperation is not just a trend today, but a necessity. PremAIR and SlimAIR AHUs allow the combination of comfort, energy savings and certification requirements, becoming a natural standard in modern, sustainable architecture.
