HUBA tent by Pawel Lewandowski

09 of April '20

An overnight stay in the treetops? It's possible thanks to the HUBA project. Pawel Lewandowski, a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, created a tent to be hung in a tree.

HUBA allows you to look at nature from a completely different perspective. It is an unusual tent that was specially designed to be hung in the crown of trees. The author, referring to his childhood and contact with nature, says this about his idea:

Walking in trees is some kind of atavism, which is particularly preserved among children. However, when we ask a child why he climbs a tree or plays in a tree house, we won't hear a concrete, practical answer. We will learn that it is just "cool." Perhaps this infantile and naive answer, seemingly explaining nothing, is a clue in the analysis of why I found the idea attractive and intriguing. I'm building my treehouse because it's "just plain cool." But what does this cliché actually mean? Although the idea seems childish on the surface, it touches on matters most relevant to man, namely his relationship with nature, nature and the search for metaphysics. The rustle of leaves, the gentle sway of a tree, the touch of bark - all these sensory experiences are calming and seem friendly, as they bring us closer to the environment in which our species formed and evolved.

observing nature from a different perspective

HUBA is designed for nature photographers and nature observers such as ornithologists, but also for tourists wishing to experience a unique adventure. Pawel Lewandowski, who is himself a climber and mountaineer, decided to analyze the market for hanging tents. It turned out that the range of products in this sector is quite modest. After determining what requirements his project should meet, he constructed the tent, creating a number of new technical solutions, allowing it to be located in a tree.

Theuser is able to suspend the tent and get to it safely, even without knowledge of mountaineering techniques. The rigidity of the platform gives a solid support, providing the comfort of staying at altitude, which, together with the tent's covering - a tropic, allows for a peaceful, safe night's sleep and, for example, observation and discreet photography of nature. Importantly, the tent is safe for trees - non-invasive installation does not cripple the trunks.

The project was created as a master's degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk in the Product Design Studio under the direction of Professor Jaroslaw Szymanski. The tent is a prototype product.
