Andrzej Strumillo has died

09 of April '20

Andrzej Strumillo was born in Vilnius in 1927. He traveled a large part of his life - he studied in Lodz, then moved to Krakow, where he earned his diploma, to Warsaw, and then visited Nepal, Japan, Turkey, Syria and Thailand, among others. He finally settled in Maćkowa Ruda, where he raised horses.

Together with Andrzej Wajda and Jan Tarasin, among others, he belonged to the Self-education Group founded by Andrzej Wróblewski. After moving to the capital, he worked for the Polish Chamber of Commerce - designing exhibition pavilions. In later years, when he was teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, he initiated the creation of the interdisciplinary meetings "Art and Environment" in Wigry and the International Sculpture Plein Air "Integrart". In the early 1980s, he cooperated with the United Nations in New York - he served as head of the graphics studio.

Creative work

Andrzej Strumillo's work was greatly influenced by Wladyslaw Strzeminski. Poetic, metaphorical qualities resound in his works, although during his studies in Cracow he painted in the spirit of socialist realism. The artist illustrated books by Joseph Conrad, Anton Chekhov, Wislawa Szymborska and Hans Christian Andersen, among others.

Thanks to his numerous trips, his workshop continued to develop - the artist was inspired by Japanese art, its techniques and ideas. From his trips he also brought back photographs, largely reportage. He used all these experiences in his works, experimenting, constantly looking for new forms of expression. Andrzej Strumillo did not stop at fine arts - his oeuvre also includes three volumes of poetry, as well as diaries.

He showed his works all over the world - in many Polish cities, but also in New Delhi, Hanoi, Kathmandu, Antwerp, Milan, New York, Kaunas, Berlin and Tokyo, among others.
