Warsaw without red and white posts

26 of May '20

The classic red-and-white street posts are disappearing from the capital. Instead of them, black ones are to be installed on the streets. This is a decree of Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski. "Colorful" posts are considered too bright. However, the city has something else in mind - behind the mayor's decision is the desire to standardize the appearance of the streets.

Warsaw is not the only one to host red-and-white posts on its streets. In almost every place in Poland you can find such a solution. However, in those cities that boast a historic section, stylized posts are most often used.

In Warsaw, these are the so-called "mermaids" - black pegs with the coat of arms of the city where the mermaid is located. Outside the strict center, simple black posts designed by Tomasz Gamdzyk, former head of the aesthetics department, are installed. In further parts of Warsaw, these are "patriotic" posts - white and red, the cheapest, which quickly corrode and deteriorate.

According to the new ordinance, the colored pegs are not to be dismantled, unless the road by which they stand is being repaired. Then they are to be replaced with one of two black models.
