  3. The history of Polish success in the Mies van der Rohe Award includes numerous nominations and one victory - the Mieczyslaw Karlowicz Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin, designed by Alberto Veiga and Fabrizio Barozzi.
  4. The nomination procedure for the Mies van der Rohe Award is based on submissions from independent experts, architects' associations and the Advisory Committee, which consists of recognized representatives of the architectural community.
  5. The jury of the Mies van der Rohe Prize 2026 is made up of international architects Smiljan Radić, Carl Bäckstrand, Chris Briffa, Zaiga Gaile, Tina Gregorič, Nikolaus Hirsch and Rosa Rull.

The process of selecting Mies van der Rohe Award winners involves three stages: the announcement of the list of nominations (November 2025), the selection of a shortlist of 40 objects (January 2026) and the selection of five finalists (February 2026). Fourteen! This is how many Polish projects have a chance to win the biennial European Union Prize in the Mies van der Rohe competition for contemporary architecture. Who will compete for this prestigious award?

Awarded by the European Commission and theMies van der Rohe Foundation since 1987, the prize recognizes the best projects completed in the two years preceding a given edition. So far, despite numerous nominations, the award has come to Poland only once, with the Mieczyslaw Karlowicz Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin, designed by Alberto Veiga and Fabrizio Barozzi.

Who will choose the winner?

What is the nomination procedure? Independent experts invited by the organizers, architects' associations and the Advisory Committee submit their types. From a pool of 410 nominated projects, the jury selects those that will make it to the final round and ultimately receive this prestigious award. The facilities this year will be judged by a jury consisting of: Smiljan Radić, Chilean architect, author, among others, of London's Serpentine pavilion in 2014, Carl Bäckstrand, architect and CEO of Scandinavian studio White Arkitekter, Chris Briffa, an architect from Malta, whose projects dialogue with the historical fabric with great sensitivity, Zaiga, who specializes in adaptations of historic buildings Gaile, a Latvian architect and preservationist, Slovenian-born architect and educator Tina Gregorič, a professor at Vienna University of Technology, Nikolaus Hirsch, architect and curator, artistic director of the CIVA center dedicated to the city in Brussels, and Rosa Rull, Catalan architect, co-founder of theBAILORULL + ADD Arquitectura studio.

Polish nominations for the Mies van der Rohe Prize 2026

On November 6, 2025, we learned the list of all nominated realizations. The short list, which will include forty objects, will be announced in January 2026. The five finalists will be announced in February, and the winner in April 2026.

We publishedthe unofficial list of Polish nominations in October - today it's time to confirm it. Thirteen projects on Polish territory and one designed by Polish architects outside the country have been nominated for the Mies van der Rohe 2026 award. Polish architecture ranks very well in this European list. France leads in the number of nominations, with 32 projects, followed closely by Spain with 24 objects, then Italy (21), Slovenia (16), Belgium (15), Greece and Ireland (14). 13 nominations in addition to Poland were won by Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Lithuania and Ukraine.

What Polish projects won nominations?

Setting new standards for social housing, Ajnfart in Rybnik by SLAS Architects, the reconstruction of the Stefan Zeromski Theater in Kielce. Stefan Żeromski Theater in Kielce by the WXCA studio, a columbarium in the municipal cemetery in Radom by BDR Architects, an educational building with CLT in the Marszewo Forest Botanical Garden in Gdynia by the Gierbienis + Poklewski studio, The OKO Interactive Fairy Tale and Animation Center in Bielsko-Biala designed by Nizio Design International, the mirrored Headquarters of the Zagłębie Chamber of Commerce in Dąbrowa Górnicza by MWArchitekci, the House of Our Lady of Heart in Warsaw, behind which is the xystudio team, the "Storm" Action Park at the Warsaw Uprising Mound, appreciated both in Poland and abroad, the fruit of the work of Archigrest and topoScape, the Przystań Widna 2A Neighborhood Center in Gdynia designed by teams from the PB / Studio, StudioMania and Ipreferanalog studios, the wooden library in Choszczówka by the Ambient studio, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum Visitor Service Center in Oświęcim designed by Kozień Architekci, the EcoFarm in Wólka Konopna designed by the Arche Group and one of the "most talked-about" buildings in Poland in recent years - the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners in cooperation with the APA Wojciechowski team. We can also add one foreign project to this pool - the Polish Embassy building in Berlin designed by JEMS Architects.
