A new train station will be built in Koszalin. The modern body will feature frescoes under conservation protection

03 of September '21

Koszalin authorities and PKP S.A. have officially approved the construction of a new railroad station in the city, which is also to become a new landmark of the city. The current building will be demolished. The design of the new edifice, along with landscaping, was developed by TBiArchitekci from Gdansk. It will be a combination of modernity and history. This is because the walls will feature, among other things, frescoes that are under conservation protection.

The current railroad station building in Koszalin has been in operation since 1962. It is a regional station, so all passenger trains stop there. The earlier edifice was burned down in 1945. The station's current premises needed rebuilding - without question. The Koszalin local government had been asking for it for many years. In 2018, PKP S.A. decided to include the renovation of the station in the "Station Investment Program for 2016-2023." At that time, the station served about 3,400 passengers per day.

Finally, last year, PKP S.A. selected a contractor for the design documentation of a new station in Koszalin. The concept for the construction of the new station was developed by TBiArchitekci from Gdansk. Significantly, it was consulted with residents and city councilors, as well as representatives of NGOs, community activists and activists. The new station could be ready even in 2022.

new in place of the old

What specifically will change after the project? First of all, the old station building in Koszalin will be demolished. In its place will stand a smaller block, with a more regional character, which will become a new landmark of the city , according to the investor. Among other things, the project involves extending the city tunnel so that a shelter can be built there. The station's main entrance will be located from Armii Krajowej Street.

The new station building is to fit into the existing historical composition and view axis. The strong and distinctive form of the canopy covering the transparent parts of the main lobby, waiting room and service area of the station will make the building recognizable on the map of railroad stations.

modernity and frescoes

An interesting solution has been applied to the design of the station's lobby. It will have two floors, and the walls will feature frescoes, which are, by the way, under conservation protection. The lobby will feature ticket offices and retail and service outlets. Staircases leading to the building's floor are also planned on both sides of the lobby. In turn, the southern part of the building will house a waiting room for travelers, a pharmacy and office space. In the northern part, a descent to the underground floor with technical rooms is planned.

The frescoes on the walls of the hotel are not the only decorative elements of the station that will come under conservation protection. The project also calls for the creation of a pedestrian walkway, which will highlight the lobby walls preserved from the existing building that contain valuable sgraffito.

In addition, the station is to be brought up to modern traveler service standards. There will be a number of progressive solutions, including for people with disabilities. The entire building is to be maintained with a modern look and bright colors.

Changes will also take place in the square in front of the station. The pavement will be replaced with one that will harmonize aesthetically with that in the rest of the city. The station square is to be open to the city and people in many senses of the word.

The train station in Koszalin is an extremely important investment for the city. It is the gateway through which tourists enter our city. The first impression is extremely important. I am glad that this first impression will soon cease to be our embarrassing calling card ," said Mayor Piotr Jedliński.

The 2016-2023 RailwayStation Investment Program is one of the projects envisaged for implementation as part of the "Strategy for Responsible Development until 2020 (with an outlook to 2030)." Thanks to it, 189 railway station investments will be carried out for a total of PLN 1.6 billion. As a result of the measures taken at the stations, the level of passenger service will be improved and there will be integration of railroads with other modes of transport.
