In the world of the Mad Men series, or the perfect office

12 of August '20

New name, new space

The next four seasons let more fresh air into the agency's interiors. New name, new location, new place. Although the space has been more divided - it is light, bright and modern. Already from the company's lobby beams the warm glow of design icons - those waiting sit on a red and blue upholstered sofa designed by Florence Knoll or a yellow upholstered bench by the same designer.

A wide, bright corridor leads from the lobby to the office - instead of thick carpet, there is a shiny smooth floor surface. Gone is the open space - the space has been divided into offices or co-working areas. The offices and corridor are divided by light partitions, which are equipped with a transparent panel in the upper part - near the ceiling - so that the offices and passageways are better illuminated. Access to the view and daylight is again available to those who matter to the company - secretaries' desks are still located next to the supervisor's room. These are times when status, but also often gender, determines the space and design of an office (or desk).

Of particular note is the office of one of the company's founders Roger Sterling. It has been decorated in a rather modern way - and there is no shortage of design icons in the furnishings. White, round and oval forms dominate. Elliptical Tulip table on a futuristic leg designed by Eero Saarinen, on it a white mushroom-shaped lamp designed for Artemide. There's also an LC4 chaise longue designed by a trio including Le Corbusier, Jeanneret, Perriand, and wall panels filled with an op-art dot motif like in Bridget Riley's work.

The conference room, where board meetings and project presentations to clients are held, is glass this time. The view from the room overlooks passageways, an area with blue Florence Knoll lounge furniture, secretaries' desks and the urban landscape. Employees, not just in the conference room, sit on Eames-designed chairs - leather, aluminum or plastic.

The Mad Men series is a real treat for lovers of good design and mid-century modern style. It's worth getting caught up in an interesting storyline with such a beautiful and unique background. The series is currently available on the Amazon Prime platform.
