For the love of furniture - Polish design from Phormy brand

03 of June '20

Every design lover will find something for himself here - all Phormy furniture is designed with great attention to perfection of shape. Some impress with the intensity of color, others draw attention to the economy of form. Both fans of "maxi" and "mini" will be satisfied. Importantly - all products were developed and made in Poland!

You can't avert your eyes from the PUFFY collection due to strong colors - orange, raspberry, deep blue and falling into yellow green. XOXO are somewhat reminiscent of dressers designed in the 1960s, characterized by their simple form and soft, eye-friendly colors. Similar associations can be had with the ORTO series - these powder-colored cabinets are extremely discreet in both shape and color, but this is what makes them appealing. And all this from the Polish brand Phormy!

Basia Hyjek: How were these collections born?
Max Kobiela: The PUFFY series of seats was created as a response to the need for small upholstered furniture for use in the space of a hallway, a child's room, a footstool in a bedroom or a pouffe in a living room. Unlike poufs that have a flat upholstered seat, the idea for the PUFFY seat was based on modules. Smaller divisions in the form of cubbies arranged in two rows also allowed maneuvering the length parameter. Hence there is a choice of 3 lengths from 66 to 110 cm. The compact PUFFY seating family is used in both private and commercial spaces. The breakthrough for PUFFY was the change of the standard finish to monochrome, a procedure that gave it new life and introduced a lot of positive energy.

XOXO, on the other hand, is a family of box furniture, both dressers and low RTV cabinets. The power of simplicity emanates from them. Besides, the distinction between the XOXO family and HUG & KISS makes us realize how much the color and finish of a piece of furniture affects its perception. The same piece of furniture, depending on how it is treated with color changes its perception. The ability to choose the type of solid and its length, along with the color and the way it is painted, gives a wide range of choices for the end customer. In addition to the standard color palette, there is the possibility to choose an individual color from the NCS palette, which is a nod to interior designers and their clients in terms of product personalization.

ORTO is another new addition to PHORMA's range of chest of drawers furniture, it is a very restrained in form, minimalist line of chests of drawers. The decorative element is the characteristic milling of the fronts. Vertical and horizontal frets are arranged orthogonally to each other, hence the name of the ORTO family. Lightness of the simple, ascetic form is added by oak legs, which are most often painted in the color of the chest.

Basia: What was the main inspiration for them?
Max: It's hard to pinpoint clear inspirations for the above collections. The designs to some extent are the result of my architectural activity, technological awareness and general observation of the world. Personally, I don't point to any particular inspiration, but I do get positive feedback from people who see my designs as inspired by the 1960s, 20th century architecture and a love of simplicity. I do not cut myself off from these associations, however, they have never been the starting point for any of my projects. I think that the blending of different inspirations gathered in the final form of each piece of furniture is a natural result of the sum of my interests and observations.

Basia: Please tell us about the products - what is the creative process like?
Max: My design work at Phorms is different from the projects made for clients. Products are not created as a result of analyzing trends, market conditions and other standard product design criteria. They are largely driven by an internal need to create a nomen omen original form. Looking back a few years and observing the growth of Phormy's brand recognition, I am sure that this way of thinking is a good choice.

Basia: Do you use your own creations in your homes?
Max: As much as possible. The first products under the Phormy label were created as a natural response to my own needs. I have quite a few prototypes at home, which are successfully undergoing use tests!
