"Eileen Gray. A House Under the Sun," a designer and architect

01 of June '20

Female architects are often forgotten, underestimated, like many female artists - they sneak in the shadows of their male colleagues. Charlotte Malterre-Barthesand Zosia Dzierżawska decided to change this and created a graphic novel about the life and work of Eileen Gray, a woman whose designs we know today as icons of modernist design.

Architect, designer, artist. Author of many iconic designs for furniture, interiors, but also buildings. The graphic novel by the Polish and French woman focuses on the 1920s, when Eileen Gray lived and worked in Paris. Her works were very popular. It is then that the designer begins to build a house called E-1027, which today is considered one of the most important projects of modernist architecture.

How did Eileen Gray look at furniture design? What was her attitude to them? Her designs were not only functional, but also affected the senses. According to the artist, furniture should serve its purpose and, in addition, adapt to change, as few people live a certain way of life forever.

You can learn more about the life and work of Eileen Gray in the book "Eileen Gray. Home Under the Sun" published by Marginesy Publishing House.
