Martyna Slowinska winner of the international competition "Hustle Hub"

20 of December '19

Martyna Slowinska's project entitled. "3-living", which is also a thesis carried out at the Wrocław University of Technology under the direction of Dr. Kajetan Sadowski, won first place in the "Hustle Hub - Youth Housing Design Competition '19: Russia" organized by the UNFUSE platform. Congratulations!

Participants in the competition were tasked with designing a coliving facility - a place with affordable housing, providing sufficient living space for young people (between twenty and thirty-five years of age) who, for various reasons (work, lifestyle), do not want to be tied to a specific place for a long time.

The UNFUSE platform proposed Moscow's Zil district, the site of a car manufacturing factory closed in 2013, as the location for the project. Nowadays, post-factory areas are becoming a fashionable part of Moscow, with many parks, neighborhoods, sports facilities and cultural centers. Such changes are also driving up prices, making it increasingly difficult to find housing for people on the threshold of adulthood. Coliving facilities may be the answer to this problem.

housing cooperative instead of a hostel

The task of the participants was to design a facility for up to 500 residents, where each of them would have a private residential space and rooms shared with other tenants. The architects had to decide what kind of spaces these would be, what size and how they would be shared. In creating the design, they also had to answer many other questions - including how to make the residents feel like they were part of a community, rather than renting a room in a hostel. Importantly, the project had to be created so that it could be built anywhere in the world, not just in Moscow.

three groups under one roof

When creating "3-living," Martyna Slowinska took into account the needs of young people and the phenomenon of "digital nomadism." She distinguished three groups of potential residents of the "Hustle Hub," which she defined by slogan - according to the priorities these groups have in life.
The travel group is for travel bloggers, artists and photographers who are constantly relocating, where they are looking for temporary work or volunteering.
The work group is made up of IT professionals, designers and entrepreneurs, for whom the most important thing is current employment and the responsibilities that come with it. In the place they choose for their home, they expect above all good transportation infrastructure.
The third group, named live by the author, are those who are not attached to a place, following interesting job opportunities, or trying life in a new country.

integration of modules

The winner designed four buildings that allow for integration. Each building has six floors, an underground parking garage and a first floor with a free plan (no division into enclosed spaces). The interiors include private spaces with bathrooms and common spaces - from semi-private terraces to semi-public spaces on each floor. The modularity and easy construction of the buildings allows for any design depending on the needs of the residents. The main core is a module with a plumbing riser, and it is based on an individual bathroom and a common space shared between two apartments. This space can be adapted into a terrace, garden or relaxation area. The tenant chooses the type of apartment (private or shared with others), which is then combined in the project with the main core. Individual units can be combined with several cores to form more complex modules.

The first floor is a communal space that can be transformed into a marketplace, exhibition space, workshops, service units, stores or offices. The design also includes patios with relaxation areas and greenery. "Hustle Hub" uses ecological installations and solutions - such as a hybrid ventilation system, a rainwater tank and solar panels.
