Architects' mood in 2020

07 of April '20

BCMM has published the results of a survey conducted among architects in March this year. They were asked about their assessment of the current market situation, demand for architectural services and price changes. The responses were undoubtedly influenced by the pandemic.

The survey was conducted using the CATI telephone interview technique with a sample of about four hundred architects who design residential and/or non-residential buildings. Sampling was conducted using a stratified random sampling method, controlled for the location of the architectural firm's headquarters (geographic region). The drawing of firms was conducted on the basis of an industry contact database held by BCMM.

assessment of the current market situation of the architectural firm

The mood of architects worsened compared to the previous edition of the survey, which was certainly influenced by the emergence of the coronavirus epidemic in Poland and the associated uncertainty about the future economic situation. Despite this, 44% of architects rate the current market situation of their office as very or rather good.

Assessment of the current market situation in relation to the number of architects in the office

The deterioration in architects' sentiment is observed in smaller studios, with up to three architects employed, where a drop in the optimism index was recorded from 51% to 39%. Among larger architectural offices, the percentage of those assessing the market situation well (58%) did not change significantly compared to the previous survey (60%).

anticipated changes in the market - demand for services in 2020

The outlook for demand for architects' services has worsened significantly. As many as 38% of respondents believe that demand for their services in 2020 will be lower than in 2019. Nearly one in three architects expects demand to stabilize at last year's level (49% a year ago), and as many as 19% of respondents have no opinion on market developments (only 5% a year ago).

Anticipated changes in the market - prices for services in 2020

Respondents' opinions on the development of prices for architectural services in the coming year are divided: one in three architects predicts that prices will remain at a similar level as in 2019, 27% forecast a decrease in prices, 22% expect prices to increase, and as many as 18% have no opinion.

Detailed survey results and charts are available in the attached report.
